Many of the “reopen the state” crowd have been accusing that teachers are greedy and lazy by fighting for virtual schooling. They claim that educators got a free, paid vacation with the pandemic and they just want it to continue. I have a few thoughts on that:
-I’d be surprised if you could find even one teacher that didn’t have to put in even more work than before to make virtual teaching work.
-In that same vein, I have yet to meet or hear of a teacher that doesn’t show up early, stay late, work on the weekend, or put their own money into supplies. This stayed true for many educators when they had to adapt to online teaching, myself included.
If you’ve spent any amount of time with educators, you know these things to be true. You also know that we definitely don’t do this job for the pay. Outside of your own family, no one else cares about your kids more than their teachers.
We want to get back to the classroom ASAP, when it is safe for us and more importantly for our kids!
Greedy? Lazy? Nonsense. If we wanted to be greedy or lazy, we would find another profession.
