Nine in the morning
The man drops his kids off at school
And he's thinking of you
”come on Rosie were going to be late!” I yell upstairs. today was Rosie's first day of kindergarten and if she wasn't nervous I sure as hell was.
” Okay I'm ready Daddy.” Rosie said running down the stairs.
” Be careful pumpkin.”
” let's go don't want to be late for the first day of school.”
“Ok”. She says looking up at me. We finally make it out of the house and in the car. Rosie never really met her mom. Lily left when rose was one. Lily left rose along with the divorce papers. I miss Lily every day. Not a day goes by were I hope or which she would pop up at my house wanting me back again. I look through my rearview mirror at Rosie.
“ you exited pumpkin.”
“Yea.”
The drive was only 10 minutes away so we got there pretty fast.
I got out of the car and made it to Rosie's side of the car and open the car door so I can try and get her out of the car seat.
After a few attempts, she’s out.
“Ready pumpkin?”
“Yesssss daddy.”
Rosie looked a lot like me. She had brown curly hair and hazel orbs. But she had Lilly’s nose.
“Let’s go then.”
We made our way over to the signup sheet outside and signed in.
“ you’re able to walk them to their class, Mr. Mendes.”
“Thanks.”
Thank god I thought to myself. Let’s hope I don’t cry.we passed a bunch of classrooms until we finally got Mrs y/ln’s classroom. And that’s the first time I saw her.
“Hi I’m Mrs y/ln and you are .” She said in a silky voice.
Rosie was clinging onto my leg. I knew she’d be a little nervous. Just like her daddy.
“Rosie don’t be shy.” I tell her looking down at her
“ it’s okay.” She replied making me look up at her as I got up.
“Well, Rosie, why don’t we go inside so we can color.”
Rosie started to let go of my leg and walked over to Mrs y/ln.
I watched as she grabbed her hand and Mrs y/ln guide her in the classroom to a table with other kids who were coloring. I moved closer to the door leaning against the frame. Watching her interact with Rosie put a smile on my face. Mrs y/ln looked up and smirked at me. She said something to Rosie and got up and made her way over to me.
”your Rosie's dad”?
” Shawn and yeah .”
” you do know you can go now right.”
” I know I just don't want to take off just yet.”
” she’ll be fine I promise.”
” how about I give you my phone and you update me about her okay.” she smiled at my concerns.
” yes I promise to update you if you leave.”
” yes of course.”
We exchanged numbers and as I was leaving I looked back.
” Have a nice day.” I still didn't know her name. And it was like she could hear my every thought.
” it's y/n and you too.”
