the quest for seawater, 5/10/19
I needed some seawater and sea sand for my spellwork so I decided to take the spirit family and the two teacup dragons on a little cycling adventure around the forest and waterways and the beaches around my house.
With the teacups clinging on to my backpack and G and Mei coasting alongside my bike, we set off along the park network down towards the sea. The sky was brewing up with a storm, the grey clouds rolling in. We spot a lot of wind serpents darting through the clouds. In the darker areas of the sky swirl a few storm serpents, and they are purported to eat wind serpents so they must be on the hunt.
G and Mei have a little friendly competition on speed. When I ask Mei how she’s not tired running at the same speed that I’m cycling (which is quite fast, really), she replies that it’s what hellhounds are good at. Built for speed or something like that. My cycling speed is a bit too fast for the teacup dragons’ liking, but we make do. They enjoy the thrill of it all.
We pass some people and a whole lot of forest-like areas and past some seafood restaurants and residences. We near a section of beach that is more secluded off the cycling tracks and covered with a lot of dark rounded rocks. These rocks are covered in small barnacles and scuttling blue crabs.
The sea is calm and the waves lap rhythmically against the rocks. This part of the beach is slightly away from a pier where there are children playing in the water and on the beach and people go to take photos of the scenic sea. There is a bunch of otter spirits frolicking about in the waters near the pier. They don’t seem to mind the people and the noise.
I ready my jars and stoop down to collect the water. I can feel multiple eyes staring at me from the water and the rocks further out to sea. I see a small finned creature leap off the rock closest to me and into the water. I think it’s a type of mermaid.
The moment I bend down to get the water, the waves start rising and crashing up against the rocks. The low tide starts roaring and getting higher and rushing against the rocks. I almost slip off the rock I’m standing on. The water seems to be chasing me up the shore. I can’t step in the water because I have an open wound on my foot and salt is going to HURT. It’s almost as if the sea wanted me to back off.
I manage to get my water, albeit without an uproar. Even someone else on the beach commented on how sudden the waves seemed to intensify. A few children had to back up the beach from the water.
I see a few mermaid-like creatures staring at me from the water and the rocks, so I explain that I’m only taking a little water for my spellwork. I don’t have any offerings, and there is no litter around to pick, so I indicate clearly that I am leaving and will not be bothering the water any longer.
The tide starts to calm down and recede.
