A Letter From Our Captain
Dear Team Laura! Members and Donors,
As our Relay year comes to a close this coming August, I cannot begin to express how truly thankful I am for ALL your efforts, donations, and support this year. Because of all of you, we raised $11,255 dollars with OVER 85 official registered members just this year! Making us the 4th highest raising team out of 102 at UGA. Not only was this such a record for our team, but we also won "Top Fundraising Team of the Night" at Relay and March Madness Student Organization Winner. Additionally, we were nominated for UGA Ampersand Magazine's "Best In Class" competition for the student organization "Most Likely to Make You Smile."
Truly, you all did more than I could ever imagine from a percentage night at Ben & Jerry's and Mirko, personal pledges through half-marathon blogs and twitter competitions, purchasing our new t-shirt, a kick-off event, participating in the Relay Date Auction, and so much more! This has been such a memorable Relay For Life year and has really served to keep Laura's memory alive in our hearts. Team Laura! relays for so many parents, grandparents, friends, and relatives; and we all are here to fight one terrible six-letter word and to support each other while we participate in the fight.
I'd also like to take this time to give a HUGE shoutout to our wonderful Executive Board- Erin Cheatham, Michelle Juda, Shelby Lambert, Madison Miracle, Rachel Kneeland, & Kimmie Oldenburg. These ladies put their heart and soul into this organization this year and pushed it to these record-breaking heights. It would have never been the same without their hard-work. Also, I'd like to give a special thanks to Conner Blackwell for representing this organization in UGA Homecoming Court and the Date Auction. And a thank you to Sarah Martin, Daniela Romero, Kelsie Fowler, Danielle Shepard, Brianna Blackman, Jake Williams, Rachel Hayes, David Detweiler, Tamera Willis, Mekisha Telfer, Erin Notarthomas, Jason Hopkins, Rebekah Tereska, Alison Wald, & Maddie Swab for all personally fundraising over $100 for Team Laura! And a special thank you to our Executive Board Chair, Dessa Dunn, who was Head of Recruitment, and our top fundraiser this year! Raising $2,135 dollars!!
Lastly, thank you to our supporters that have been here since the very beginning in 2010. Since then, we have raised an astonishing $21,428 dollars. To put that in perspective, that is 429 nights of free-lodging at one of the 38 Hope Lodges across the US for a cancer patient and her mom; or 857 free rides to and from a cancer treatment, or 514 cancer patients that are able to be connected to a patient navigator to help them through the emotional, physical, and financial challenges of cancer; or 85 research grants that will help support Cancer Prevention Study-3 which will allow us to better understand, prevent, and treat cancer.
