—Things were really looking up, in more ways than one. It had been something the entirety of monsterkind never believed would happen to them, something that was thought to only happen within silly dreams and picture books told to children before bed, and although many wished on the artificial stars pinned to the rock ceiling and whispered their foolish desires into echo flowers, it seemed that dream was finally becoming something of reality.
The Barrier had broken, all from the efforts of a stone-faced child with a helluva lot of determination, and now monsters were bustling about the Underground as if it were the end of the world. And in a sense, it surely was. Life confined to the rocky depths of this caged world would end for good, and monsters would finally reach up and touch the sunny land of the Surface. Already many of the citizens had made their ways up into the fresh air, while others took their time saying goodbye to the place they had called home. Sans himself still wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. After countless resets filled with nothing but heartbreak and disappointment, now knowing that soon he would leave his home in Snowdin town and feel the sun on his skeletal face, all Sans felt now was the thrill of freedom.
Papyrus had gone into something of an enthusiastic frenzy, hardly even pausing to breathe as he swept up the house. By morning everything of importance had been packed and ready to take up to the Surface. Despite both of the brother’s excitement and anticipation, Sans wanted to take a stroll about for one last look at the place he had called home. After all, even if it was one’s cage, it’s still a home.
The first stop was at Grillby’s a frequent for the hooded monster through well and rough times. There was lots of memories made and forgotten in the pub, Sans just hoped the elemental bartender didn’t mind serving one last drink before closing up shop for good.
It seemed that Grillby had already begun packing, boxes were littered about the place, with the flaming monster no where in sight. Sans let himself in, regarding the stacked chairs and bare tables with a feeling of both hope and melancholy. He wondered for a moment if Grillby would open up another bar up on the Surface.
“*ay, grillbz!” Called the skeleton as he sidestepped a box in his path. “*you in here?”
