“Never forget”...funny how this slogan seems only applicable to white history. ... These are all of the thousands of monuments, schools, roads, highways, libraries, and hospitals that are named after confederate army generals/KKK members...take that in for a second; schools...named after men that wanted to continue the enslavement of Black people...schools that little black children attend to receive an education that is meant to instill in them value and purpose...let that sink in for a second. Are you still blind? Are you still confused? This country treats treason as a crime punishable by death...yet in these men’s case they are honored and glorified...revered as men of legacy...fuck it...let’s honor Hitler for giving us the VW Beetle...let’s give him a statue! Advice for Remy, Day 161. Times and attitudes change and evolve, and we must all evolve with them. This is Rickon. Aside from being a majestic beast, he's one the best pieces of furniture we've ever bought. As far as we're aware, Rickon has never been a slave owner, a racist, a wife-beater, a facist, a war criminal or a serial killer. However, despite how much we love him (and how he neatly ties the rooms together with his kitsch charm and dashing good looks), if we found out he was any of those things, we'd probably feel it a little inappropriate to display him so prominently in the house. We wouldn't smash him to pieces and remove his memory from existence - rather we'd probably store him in the attic, so that on rare occasions he was uncovered, we could tell you why he was up there and not on display. We'd explain that just because we felt it inappropriate to have him in our living room, it didn't mean that we would simply erase from memory any of the things he did in his past. As times move on and attitudes evolve, there are always those left behind - red-faced and bilously sputtering about political correctness going mad and not even being able to make a joke any more. They were there when women were granted the vote, when black people were allowed to drink from their water fountains, when gay people could marry, and they'll be there for a lot more in the future no doubt. They want things to remain just as they are, no matter how much times have changed or how much things harm others. So I know it's very compliated at the moment, but it seems like common sense to say that no matter whether you won a war, founded a beloved organisation or blessed many with your philanthropy, if you were also a massive racist we probably shouldn't have a 20 foot high stature of you in a position of prominence. And if you come across anyone who disagrees, build a statue of Jimmy Savile on their front lawn - for all the money he raised for charity of course.
