Tech Level 2: Depths EP (2021)

Good news for everyone: here’s a free visit back to the turn of the millennium when underground jungle and drum-and-bass were top priority. No one can be phased about how much else Justin Broadrick could have in the vaults. He can resurrect many side endeavors and post unreleased albums if and when he wants to and quick. Tech Level 2 had vinyl presence on both Hardleaders and Teknologikal and two of the Depths tracks, ”The Almighty” and “Returned To The Depths”, were meant to be released on the latter but were shelved when Tech Level 2 ended in 2004. The other two, ”The Depths Of Hell” and  “Suspended”, may have never been pitched before. Now, they finally have their chance to shine. For those who followed Broadrick’s previous project Youpho, here’s your follow-up.

Six months ago, another legendary junglist, Christoph De Babalon, decided to pry open his vaults and went further backwards to crack open some rarities and previously unreleased tracks, too. Our favorite drum-and-bass artists have been real good to us as of recent.

Tech Level 2 originally existed between 1999 and 2004. The project Tech Level 2 was titled by Hardleaders boss Carl Collins upon signing Justin solo to the seminal drum and bass imprint shortly after the drum and bass project Youpho (1997-00) with Oliver Waters folded, Youpho was also on Hardleaders (the label formed by Carl Collins to initially release side projects from both Dillinja and Lemon D) amongst many other labels. Tech Level 2 released four 12”’s and had four compilation appearances before Justin shelved the project in 2004 having become disenchanted with the scene. Tech Level 2 had amazing DJ support back in the day, opening Grooverider’s BBC Radio show on occasion and support from most the big operators back then. The project folded just as Dillinja was supporting and working on a release by Tech Level 2 for Valve / Beatz, the release was never completed.

This new EP is inspired by the memory of the Valve club nights ran by Dillinja and Lemon D that Justin attended often across the UK back in the late 90’s/ early 00’s.

Tech Level 2: Revolve (2020)

Justin Broadrick is not just a legendary musician but a great resurrection artist, too. Last year he brought back Techno Animal as Zonal with Kevin Martin and now Tech Level 2 became next in line. It now picks up where it left off in 2003 after being inspired by his turn-of-the-millennium drum-and-bass days with Dillinja and Lemon D so there’s no doubt what to expect. Revolve is a four-track outing (as opposed to two on strictly vinyl) where stacks of durable jungle breaks go furious and run all sorts of correct sharp turns. Trademark Broadrick drones zoom through as the e.p.’s dense heavy construction lays itself out. Tech Level 2’s return is now more sharper and blunt in its delivery. It’s without the Oughts’ charm and soul of all previous output it’s had and loses a fraction of its’ thickness, but it’s a small minimal cost paid considering it retains the era’s jungle structure.

So place your bets as to which project Broadrick will bring back to life next. Curse Of The Golden Vampire? Sweet Tooth? Maybe Atrocity Exhibition? That’s a 500-to-1 payout but we can only nightmare.
