playing warhammer 40k: inquisitor - martyr and tech priests are the Funniest Dudes.
It’s indicative of how violence and suspicion are deeply baked into the Imperium that this magos is just taking ALL of this as certainty. And that dogmatic obedience isn’t letting him even ponder how things could be different. Not even a wishful off hand comment. Betryal and murder is inevitable, there’s no recourse but to be sad.
More people need to point out that the ‘Golden Age’ Imperium was already a tyrannical, miserable, dumbed-down dystopia. Before the Horus Heresy, and before it’s emperor was put on the Golden Throne.
I have important information. Apparently the admech had a little uprising in the 800s when some magi got so tech brained about lubrication that they decided to found a militant splinter cult and go to war with the rest of the mechanicus. Again. This is because they got really obsessed with lube.
Genuinely one of my favorite lore nuggets I've stumbled on in a hot minute. One of my least favorite reoccuring tropes in 40k is how the Imperium's internal problems aways turn out to largely be the fault of some external force (usually chaos, sometimes genestealers, very occasionally some other xenos looking to make trouble) meddling behind the scenes. Heresy should *rarely* be actual chaos worship or tyranid mutant fuckery, more often its just a bunch of dogmatic weirdos with too many guns and strong opinions about Vaseline that decide the nonbelievers have to die because that's what they've been told all their life anyways, just now it's over lube and the non believers are the next workshop over because tech priests get way to invested in their tech.
Adeptus Mechanicus — Trust us, we wouldn’t give you any upgrades that we haven’t already tested on ourselves. (Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, GW, 1987; edit — no specific credit but looks like Tony Hough’s work) The Imperium was a galaxy of body horror from the beginning.
