Shutter
Controls
The amount of light hitting the film/sensor = quantitative effects.
How movement is represented = qualitative effects.
Quantitative effects
The shutter is located at the back of the camera body, just in front of the film. It is called a focal plane shutter (leaf shutter, found in the lens).
The shutter appears as a cloth blind and it moves left to right when using film and up and down when using digital.
There is another type of shutter which is a metal shutter.
You must never touch the shutter as this can ruin the shutter completely.
It is controlled by dual/ control wheel on the camera. The numbers relate to the time duration the shutter is open for, expressed in fractions of a section, or full seconds.
1" would allow more light to pass than 1/1000.
The shutter speed is arranged in a stop sequence: 4", 2", B (bulb), 1", 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/15, 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000, 1/200, 1/4000.
B stands for bulb, which, when put on this setting, means you can hold the shutter open for as long as you want. This is easier to do when a shutter release cable is used.
This setting could be used when capturing light trials, star trails.
Each stop allows half/twice as much light to pass. 125 > 60 = lighter + 1. 250 > 500 = darker -1. 1" > 8" = lighter +3. 1/4000 > 1/60 = lighter +6.
Quantitative effects
Controls how movement is represent. A slow shutter speed with moving objects produces a blur. A faster shutter speed with moving objects produces a frozen image.
Panning with a slow-ish shutter speed gives a frozen subject with a blurred background. You have to follow the moving subject so they appear to be still and what is still appears to be moving.
What moves during exposure? The mirror moves causing the camera set vibration as well as possible hand movement, resulting in camera shake.
Camera shake can be avoided by using a tripod, a faster shutter speed, using a table/flat object and a timer, or lock the mirror prior to exposure (found in custom functions, on camera menu).
The X signifies the flash sync speed.
Aperture
Controls
The amount of light hitting the film/sensor is the quantitative effect.
The depth of field is the qualitative effect.
Quantitative effects:
Aperture is selected by rotating the ring on the lens barrel (manual cameras) or by rotating the command dial (auto cameras).
Usually aperture is wide open. The actual size of the aperture selected is only apparent when taking a photo, or depressing the depth of field preview button.
Aperture is arranged in a sequence known as F-numbers or fstops.
The whole number sequence is: 1, 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22, 32, 45, 64, 90, 128, 180, 256.
Each stop allows twice/half as much light to pass through. F8 > f 5.6 = +1. F4 > F11 = -1. F22 > F11 = +2. F1.4 > F4 = -3.
Qualitative effects
The qualitative effects also controls the depth of field. How much appears in focus either side of critical focus point. Arranged 1/3 in front and 2/3 behind of point of focus.
Large aperture = small F stop number e.g. F2 = narrow/shallow depth of field. And a small aperture = large F stop number e.g. F16 = wide depth of field.
Depth of field is usually indicated, by engravings on the lens barrel (not zoom lenses).
Other factors influencing depth of field are the lens focal length being longer will narrow the depth of field and the wider the angle of the lens the wider the depth of field.
The distance of the subject will affect the depth of field.. The nearer the subject is the narrower depth of field. The further away the subject is the wider the depth of field.
Wide depth of field would suggest most of the image being in focus. A shallow depth of field would suggest only part of the image is in focus.
