On January 23, 1985, The Thundercats pilot aired, which became the syndicated episodes Exodus/The Unholy Alliance and released later on video as the movie (also blended in with episodes Berbils and The Slaves of Castle Plun-darr). The pilot was filled with peril. It began with the cat-like Thunderians escaping to a distant galaxy as their home world Thundera explodes. As if that is not enough, the fleeing fleet is then attacked by their enemies "the mutants". In particular, they focused on the ship of the noble Thundercats in an effort to steal the mystical Thunderian artifact Sword of Omens. The leader of the Thundercat nobles Jaga is able to repel them, but at a cost. The ship's piloting system was damaged, so Jaga had to manually pilot the ship instead of being in suspended animation, the ship crash landed not on their originally destined planet, and Lion-O, the heir to the Thundercat throne, grew physically in his pod due to a malfunction. On the new world, Third Earth, the physically, though not in other ways, grown Lion-O takes his place as leader of the Thundercats that survived from the ship... Panthro, Cheetara, Tygra, WilyKat, Wily-Kit, and Snarf. Even then, they are still are not safe as the mutants Slithe, Monkian, and Jackalman have tracked them. They are joined by a powerful ally in the form of Mumm-Ra of the Black Pyramid on Third Earth, who also wanted the Sword of Omens. The mutants were reluctant to join forces, but once Mumm-Ra damaged their space craft, they changed their mind. ("Pilot", "Exodus", "Unholy Alliance", Thundercats, TV, Event)
