Awkward situations always catches us off guard (that’s why it’s called awkward), and they leave us feeling uneasy and unsure how to respond at that moment.
But there’s always a way..
1️⃣ As difficult as it may sound , it’s best to just stay calm (yes, take a deep breath ).. because that will help you to think clearer & better.
2️⃣ As much as possible, it’s always best at that moment, try to redirect the conversation in a different direction. If you find yourself unable to that , just exit gracefully if needed.
3️⃣ If possible look for alternative ways to diffuse the situation. Like finding common interests or experiences that you can bond over with that person. This really helps in making the situation less awkward.
4️⃣ Now depending on the situation, you can always look to someone else to engage in a conversation . That will keep you occupied.
5️⃣ Humour always plays a big part in my life. There’s so much learning in these situation if you can look at it humorously. And if you do it well, a well placed joke or a light hearted comment can help manuever the situation and lessen the tension.
And finally simply listening attentively can ease the awkwardness. Show genuine interest in what the other person is saying & ask follow up questions to keep the conversation flowing smoothly.
And brining it home with this quote I read somewhere “Awkward situations are just opportunities to exercise our resilience & humor” .. unknown
