FORGOTTEN TRENDS #1: The Saw

Today we’re here to introduce to our new section about forgotten trends. This first volume will be dedicated to the saw, a very common sound in dance music that became very popular in 2003 thanks to the Italian producer Benny Benassi. If you want to know more about this forgotten dance music trend just keep reading!

The saw sound is the star in some of the most known and popular all-time dance productions since the 90s. One of these is, for example, ‘Better Off Alone’ by DJ Jurgen-project Alice Deejay, with Judith Pronk as singer and performer. Its main melody is known by everyone in the globe and it was even sampled by David Guetta with Ne-Yo and Akon.

It’s a sound very easy to create with a triangle wave and maybe that’s the origin of its name and became very popular between euro-dance producers. But then somebody did something different with it and that was the beginning of a new dance music trend.

Benny Benassi had produced some tracks before using other names like the hit ‘I Feel So Fine’ as KMC (which reached #1 in UK club charts) but it was in 2002 when he released ‘Satisfaction’. He took the saw sound lower and used it like almost a bassline maybe inspired by some electro stuff like ‘Flat Beat’ by Mr Oizo. It was a hit and it reached #2 in UK Singles charts after Ministry Of Sound’s Data Records released the video we all know in 2003.

Yes. It was a hit and everyone of us know ‘Satisfaction’ and its video, but this track is not the origin of the trend we’re going to talk. Maybe it opened the door for Alter Ego and Coburn success but the origin of the saw trend was the style of his next singles ‘No Matter What You Do’.

Its bassline was fully made by this sound but maybe taking some inspirations in another known ones like ‘Intro’ by Alan Braxe & Fred Falke or ‘Young Hearts’ by Kujay Dada, with those octave-jumps. Or maybe not, I’m just writing what I think. The fact is that style became very popular and some producers started doing songs that way too.

There are very smart people in the world so some of then made a really smart thing. They put this Benassi sound in a Boogie Pimps-structure song. The Pimps were killing it too (UK #3) with their cover of Jefferson Airplane’s ‘Somebody To Love’ so...

one hit + another hit = huge hit

This was the formula that Royal Gigolos took for their hit ‘California Dreamin’’ (#2 France).

And Global Deejays (formerly known as Global Playboys, nothing to do with the name of the act we talked about before, right?) for ‘The Sound Of San Francisco’ (reaching top 10 in seven countries).

And Vinylshakerz for ‘One Night In Bangkok’

And I’m sure there are more that we don’t even know.

In maybe 2 years everybody was bored about this subgenre sometimes called tech-house (or tek-house) so all these acts started working on other styles or even disappeared.

Meanwhile, Benny kept working on 100% original and pretty good material (a little different and maybe more trancy) with his cousin under the name of Benassi Bros and then he started remixing some big acts like Jordin Sparks, Florida, Shakira, Tiësto, and Madonna, who took his remix for an alternative version of the video for ‘Celebration’. He later produced quite successful tracks featuring Kelis and other stuff for Chris Brown and Madonna herself.
