Telfar Clemens

February 14th, 2018 - UMMA Black History Month

Telfar Clemens is a world-renowned contemporary fashion designer who established his NYC label, Telfar, in 2005. His designs are unisex, focusing on breaking down the gender binary established in mainstream fashion. To him his fashions are “horizontal, democratic, universal.” In 2017 he won the top prize from the CFDA/Vogue fashion fund.

Clemens distinguishes himself further from the fashion establishment by making efforts to democratize his creative process. His Fall/Winter 2013 collection was collaborative, he used gallery space in Midtown and an app called TELFARstyle to create a public design concept submission process which influenced his real runway looks.
