I've just recently learned that the word "tempong" from "nasi tempong" is actually a Bhasa Osing word (Banyuwangi) which means "tampar" in Indonesian. I've always suspected that most of the "Balinese" cuisine actually has origins in East Java.

Wonderful dinner for last night in #banyuwangi ... #tempong style meal... #friedchicken #tempeh , tofu, greens, rice, #sambal and fried local fish and mushrooms. Gotta admit that the first time I had fried chicken here, it seemed kinda scrawny to me. But the birds are raised such that the meat, to me, is much more delicious than bigger birds in 🇺🇸. It actually tastes like chicken. Will miss everyone here till next year.
