Status/score screens from Shadow Wraith (left) and Souls in the System (right), a pair of top-down action games by Terminal Sunset. Both games’ graphics were provided in part by Reginald DuJour, who was also the primary artist for the first Marathon.

These ships contain the digital avatar of Dr. Alex Kendall, a man who resurrects himself on the ‘Net via cloning (the logistics of this process are best left unpondered). The premise is fairly intriguing, but I’m not sure how much of the story is explored in-game.

Both titles and their manuals are available at Macintosh Garden (.org), but keep in mind that Shadow Wraith, at least, doesn’t like Classic Mode and will only run properly on original MacOS 7/8 hardware or via emulation.

Story-related pages from the Shadow Wraith manual (found at Replacementdocs). The first two give us an expanded take on the intro screen; the next two are framed as e-mails from Kendall’s AI ally, Prometheus.

Something about Shadow Wraith (and its sequel) feels like it’d be compatible with Marathon’s story; Prometheus gives off some Leela vibes and one suggested method of contact is identical to Marathon’s (though I’m not sure if there’s any terminals in the actual game), among other things.
