Terry Garthwaite was the guitarist and co-lead vocalist of the kickass late sixties/early seventies Berkeley band the Joy of Cooking who I wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who likes country/blues-tinged rock from that era. Good stuff. But it's Garthwaite's 1978 solo album Hand in Glove that gets me every time with its idiosyncratic funky experimental sound. If I remember correctly, each of her solo records in that series got increasingly experimental, with 1985's Moving Day reaching a high point of cosmic loveliness. After a 15-year break she started releasing music again in 2000 which from the descriptions on her website sounds pretty amazing as well. Garthwaite and her Joy of Cooking compatriot Toni Brown recorded an album called Cross-Country in Nashville that is available in its entirety on Youtube. If anyone outside the Bay Area is interested in getting Joy of Cooking or Terry Garthwaite records on vinyl, please let me know. I want more people to get down with this fantastic music.
