Tessa had never felt so cold in her entire life.
It had been a couple of days that she and Will were in Wales, visiting his family, and they had decided to get a hotel room to have some privacy while they took a break from their children and work.
It had been Will's idea, of course, and his mother had begged them so many times to stay over at their house, as Cecily and Gabriel had finally decided to do, that Tessa could still hear her husband's constant rejection rumbling in her head.
She was sorry to see Linette so sad, but she was grateful to Will for not giving in.
They had just returned to the hotel - a very nice and cozy place - and were both reading in the silence of the sleeping city. Looking at the clock, she saw that it was past midnight and with a sudden yawn, she decided to put the book down and go to sleep.
She had called Charlotte a few minutes before leaving his parents' house to find out how Lucie and James were doing, and knew that they had both been asleep for over two hours.
She turned off the light on her side of the bed, leaning towards Will to give him a kiss on the cheek, "Goodnight."
Will turned a slight smile at her and without taking his eyes off the words whispered, "Night love."
Tessa slipped under the covers and pulled them up to her nose. She tried to close her eyes, trying to find the sleep that so called her, but the cold in her feet was rising up her legs. Moving them closer to Will, she touched his calf. He hissed and moved his leg further away.
She smiled under the comforter, moving her leg again and putting both feet on his thigh. One of his hands snapped under the blanket, grabbing her ankle. Tessa looked up at him and Will was smiling at her amusedly, "Tessa." his tone inquisitive.
She smirked and then started moving her feet all over his leg. Will placed his book on the bedside table, shrieking when her feet slipped under his pajamas and climbed up to his knee. Tessa giggled.
"Quit touching me! Your feet are cold!" he scolded her laughing. He also put his other arm under the covers and grabbed her other ankle. Tessa wiggled, trying to free herself from his strangely warm and familiarly comforting hands.
She stopped when she realized that she would never be able to break free and stared him in the eyes with a determined look.
She sat up, now sideways on the bed, and pushed forward towards him. Will grinned and approached his wife, kissing the tip of her nose. "So cold."
He tried to get away, but Tessa took one hand behind his neck and pushed him against her, causing their lips to collide.
Will closed his eyes, moaning slightly, "Even if you kiss me like this," he panted when they pulled away, "you still are frozen and I'd rather your feet stayed more than four meters from my body."
Tessa bit his lower lip. If they had to sleep in a cold hotel just for the sake of privacy, they might as well use it to their advantage.
"Why don't you make me feel hot then?" Tessa whispered to him.
Will seemed surprised for a moment, his eyes wide open, before he laughed, "Fuck, I love you so much."
"Prove it to me."
He grinned, "Gladly."
She was used to sleeping in a nightgown and what she was wearing right now was the least sexy thing she had ever worn, but Will didn't seem to care about this little detail when he settled down so that he was on top of her, one arm supporting his weight so as not to crush her.
He kissed her slowly and Tessa grunted as he bit her lip sweetly. Her hands opened up on the sheets, before squeezing the blanket into her fists, when his fingers brushed her side and went up to her breast. His hand closed on her left breast and his thumb caressed her already hard nipple.
Tessa sighed in the kiss, taking a deep breath when she raised her leg and Will drove his hips against her. She felt how hard and ready for her he was and closed her eyes, throwing her head back, leaving her neck at his mercy.
He lifted his head so that he could kiss her fair skin under her jaw and went down to the collarbone, where he started sucking the skin as his hand went lower.
Tessa moved her hips, trying to relieve some of the tension that had formed between her thighs, but Will grabbed her by the waist, blocking her and clicking his tongue, "You have to be patient, love."
Before she could reply, he kissed her again, with more strength. His tongue moved with hers, and his hand shifted where she wanted it. When he slipped under the elastic of her panties, caressing her naked skin, Tessa moaned in the kiss, arching her back.
Will withdrew his hand snickering, pulling himself up to his seat. The comforter now forgotten at the end of the bed, her husband sat between her wide open legs and stared at her throbbing core with a ravenous look. She had to resist the impulse to close her legs when he looked into her eyes and the normally light blue, which had made her fall in love with the man so many years earlier, looked almost black.
He took his shirt off with a quick movement and then he was on her once again.
He lifted her by her hips and pulled off her panties, leaving a trail of kisses everywhere his fingers had just wandered. He caressed her inner thigh touching so close to where she needed it the most, that she took her hand to her face and grunted in frustration.
She looked down when she heard Will move and snort as he leaned over her and licked her hip. He kissed her where she knew there were stretch marks from the two pregnancies and then, pulling up her nightgown, uncovered her breasts. The swollen nipples hardened even more in the cold air, but Will was immediately there to make up for it.
His lips closed around her right nipple while his hand went to massage the other one.
Tessa gasped, feeling sensations she hadn't felt in a long time.
She lifted up her hands, sticking them in his hair and pushing his face into her chest, asking for more.
"Will." she sighed, between one caress of his tongue and another.
He gave no sign that he heard her and moved to the other breast, giving it exactly the same attention.
Tessa lifted her naked hips, rubbing against the light fabric of his pants and Will grunted against her chest, stopping his ministrations and closing his eyes, "You need to stop doing that."
She repeated the movement over and over again, watching as his face contorted into expressions of pure pleasure. She felt him hardening with each push and when both were panting Will pulled away from her, moving away so far that she was no longer in command of what they were doing.
He looked into her eyes with short breath, "You're beautiful," he whispered.
Tessa flushed and covered her face with one arm.
"You are beautiful." he repeated, "And I will never stop telling you."
Raising her head slightly, she smiled, despite the situation, and was about to reply, when she felt a finger slip between her folds. She moaned so loud that the hand of the arm with which she was covering her face clasped over her wide open mouth.
Her moans became even louder when Will stuck his finger inside her and her body reacted, her hips snapped up and her head fell back onto the pillow.
"You are so beautiful," he murmured, "so tight." his voice was so hoarse that Tessa couldn't repel a whimper. He moved his finger slowly, a much slower rhythm than they were used to, but then he accelerated, adding a second, and Tessa carried a hand between her legs. Before she could touch that bundle of nerves at the apex of her thighs, Will's hand that wasn't inside her grabbed her wrist, and she looked down at him gasping. He shook his head, tossing her hand away and shaking his finger no, "I don't think so."
"Will, please." she cried.
His fingers curled up and she screamed, thrusting down on him. He put his thumb on her most sensitive spot and she began to wiggle her hips, chasing that high she craved.
Tessa whimpered when without any warning Will took his fingers away from her and licked her sex from her entrance to her clit and sucked on it until she screamed.
She wheezed when she felt his fingers teasing her again and grabbed his hair by pulling it, knowing full well what effect that little gesture had on him and triggering a moan from him that vibrated through her body.
"Will." she gasped.
It seemed to be the only word she remembered.
"Will." she called him again and when he looked up at her, she almost came.
He stopped the movements of his tongue, leaving a kiss on the bundle of nerves and pulling himself up, took off his pants and boxer in an instant, remaining naked in front of her. Tessa felt her throat dry and smiled when he bent over her, kissing her.
She could feel the taste of her on his lips.
They both breathed in the kiss when his tip touched her center. Tessa reached between their bodies, taking his hard length in her hand and giving him a couple of strokes. Each time she pulled, his head touched her clit and it wasn't long before they both began to pant.
Will pushed his forehead against hers, "I need you."
And Tessa pleased him, opening her legs even more and waiting for him to be aligned with her entrance before pushing towards him, helping him in the movement.
As soon as he slipped inside her, they both moaned loud enough to be heard down the hall. He buried himself to the hilt and Tessa trembled when he hit a particularly sensitive spot inside her.
"Love," he kissed her lips, "I missed you so much."
Tessa looked at him with eyes full of love and carried a hand over his face. Will closed his eyes and leaned against her touch, starting to move in and out, eliciting noises of pleasure from both of them.
They saw each other every day, slept in the same bed, ate at the same table, but this - this was different. Not having distractions and only being able to worry about each other was something they had not been able to do for a long time.
Too much, thought Tessa, as Will pushed inside her and whispered sweet words to her.
She laid her hands on his hips, following his movements and feeling a new sensation bloom in the bottom of her stomach.
"Fuck." he swallowed.
From that moment on she gave the rhythm, while the sensations inside her became more and more intense. She raised her legs and wrapped them around his hips and he managed to go even deeper.
His kisses became more furious, his tongue moved in unison with her hips while her nails scratched the skin of his back.
Tessa didn't know what she meant when she sighed, "More." but Will reacted.
He gave her more.
Much more.
He sped up the pace and put his head between her neck and her head, biting and licking the skin there. The pressure between her legs increased so much that it overwhelmed every other feeling and the rhythm stopped being a rhythm the moment she started to pull him closer against her.
Will noticed this and stopped moving, starting to rotate his hips instead. The friction created was intense, devouring, and Tessa screamed when the tension inside of her reached the maximum point and suddenly loosened, releasing waves of pleasure that never seemed to stop.
He started moving again, this time faster, as he worked her through her orgasm.
Will no longer controlled himself as he felt her walls tighten and pushed, pushed harder. He stopped for a moment and then gave a last hard thrust. He shouted Tessa's name loudly as he too reached his climax.
She clung to him and closed her eyes while Will leaned over her body and stayed inside her.
An eternity passed and then he lifted his head, resting his chin on her shoulder and grazing her ear with his lips, "You good?"
Tessa was still struggling to breathe, her legs spasming, but she managed to nod.
He moved, then moaned when she still clenched around his member and slipped out from inside her, kissing her one last time.
Tessa could not find the strength to speak.
Will pulled himself up on his elbows, watching her carefully, "Tess, are you okay?"
She turned towards him, letting her head fall to the side and smiled sheepishly, "That was..."
She left the sentence hanging and her husband nodded, smirking, "You're right. That was."
Will grabbed her by the hips and twisted her around the other side, holding her to his chest.
He moved her hair to the side, placing her head between her neck and shoulder exactly as he had done a few minutes earlier, only in a completely different situation.
He kissed her shoulder and then set himself behind her, his chest flushed against her back.
"Are you still cold?" he asked her, knowing exactly what he was doing.
Tessa giggled and with the words already shrouded in sleep, she replied, "Definitely not."

Shadowhunters Short Story #61. Herongraystairs mundane AU.
It is a cold and blustery day in November of 1997 when Will Herondale and Jem Carstairs receive what they then think of, as the biggest shock of their lives.
18 year old Jem and Will have grown up with each other and have been the best of friends since the age of twelve. They met in 1991 when Jem had been sent to live with family friends Charlotte and Henry Fairchild, after his parents were killed. Will also lived with Charlotte and Henry, who were friends with his family as well, after he ran away from home at the young age of 12, after his older sister Ella died, and he could not cope with his grief. When Jem arrived from Shanghai, he and Will became fast friends and were soon totally inseparable.
Last year they had met a young woman from America named Teresa Gray, or Tessa as she preferred to be called. She had come to London in search of her brother, after her aunt who was her only other living relative, died. When she no longer could afford hotels and still found no trace of her brother, Henry and Charlotte invited her to stay with them for as long as she needed. When Tessa moved in, she, Will and Jem became extremely close and soon ended up falling in love. At first it was a total dilemma for Tessa, and for the boys. Tessa loved them both equally and could never imagine choosing between them, and Will and Jem both loved her, but they also loved each other.
Eventually one day the three of them sat down together and talked about it all. It was Jem who pointed out that actually nobody had to choose anybody, it was entirely possible for the three of them to be together, sure they couldn’t be married in a church but that was the least important thing to them.
They have now been together for a little over a year and have just moved into a small two bedroom apartment, not from Charlotte and Henry’s home.
Just a few minutes ago, Tessa had asked Jem and Will if she could speak with them, so the three of them gathered in the living room, Will and Jem side by side on the sofa and Tessa sitting opposite them on the armchair, looking pale and nervous.
“You’re not breaking up with us Tess are you? Please don’t leave me to deal with a broken-hearted Jem, he has too many emotions, I can’t handle him on my own!” Will exclaims in an exasperated tone, trying to lighten the mood. Tessa laughs as Jem lightly shoves Will.
“No it’s nothing like that. So... you know how I haven’t been feeling well the last while? How I’ve been feeling really sick and tired and sore?” Tessa begins. Will and Jem nod. “Well... I found out why I’ve been feeling that way, today.”
“What is it? Is it bad?” Jem anxiously asks, always worrying about his loved ones, terrified of loosing them like he lost his parents.
“Well not necessarily.” Tessa says, loosing her nerve and trying to skate around the issue.
“Come on Tess out with it already!” Will says, sensing that Tessa is about to try and get off track and avoid telling them the truth.
“I... I’m pregnant.” Tessa quietly says. The thought that she could be pregnant hadn’t occurred to Tessa, until she was visiting Charlotte and Henry the other day, and Charlotte had told her she was pregnant with her second child. It was then that Tessa realized she hadn’t her period in a while and that all her symptoms were similar to the ones Charlotte had just 2 years ago when she was pregnant with her first child, Charles.
“A-are you sure?” Will stammers, for once in life not knowing what to say. Tessa nods.
“Yeah, I took a test and it was positive and I haven’t had my period for about 2 months now so....” She trails off, unsure how to finish her sentence. She is both terrified and thrilled, she has always wanted children, but not until she was much older, and had finished university and gotten a stable job.
“I-is it mine, or Will’s?” Jem asks.
“I don’t know, the last time I had sex with only one of you was 4 months ago and I’m only 2 months along, so we’ll have to wait until the baby is born to find out, even then we might not know straight away, but if it’s important to you we can do a paternity test.” Tessa quietly says, now fearful that if the baby is Will’s, Jem will leave and if it’s Jem’s, William will leave.
“No, no of course it doesn’t matter, I didn’t ask because I won’t love the baby if it isn’t mine, I was just curious. Oh Tessa, I don’t care who the biological father is, no matter what that baby is mine and yours and Will’s, no matter their DNA, they’re going to have two dads, I’ve only known about them for two seconds and I already love them with all my heart.” Jem says, leaning forward to grasp Tessa’s hand in his.
“Exactly, of course this is scary and difficult, but we’re not the first teen parents out there and we won’t be the last. By the time the baby is born you’ll have finished school, Jem and I will be in our last year of university, all three of us have stable jobs and are doing all we can to get even better ones, and we’ll have so much support from Charlotte and Henry, Gideon and Sophie and my sister and her no good boyfriend.” Will says in a soft tone, trying to make Tessa smile. Gideon Lightwood and Sophie Collins are friends of theirs, Will’s sister Cecily is in a relationship with Gideon’s brother Gabriel. Will and the Lightwood brothers did not get along in the past, but recently they did manage to put their differences aside and become friends, though Will still likes to tease Gabriel.
Tessa laughs and wipes at her tears, feeling a bit more reassured now. As Will said, their friends will be more than willing to help, Cecily will be delighted to have a niece or nephew and what makes her happy makes Gabriel happy, Henry and Charlotte are always happy to help out no matter what, and Sophie and Gideon love children and will be more than willing to help out too. They have two daughters themselves and a little boy who is 4 months old and has just been discharged from hospital after being born two months premature.
“I love you both so much.” She says in a joyful tone.
“All three of us now.” Will gently says, placing a hand on Tessa’s stomach. Jem places his hand over Will’s and Tessa places hers over Jem’s.
“Yes, all three of you, I love all three of you.”
They decide to wait until the first trimester is over and the risk of miscarriage decreases greatly, to tell everyone else about the baby. Thankfully the first 3 months pass without a hitch and when they finally tell everyone, they are very supportive and loving. Of course it’s not ideal being parents at only 17 and 18 but everyone knows that if anyone can make it work, it’s Jem, Tessa and Will.
The rest of Tessa’s pregnancy passes by in a breeze, Tessa is able to finish school and decides to defer her place at a literary course in university (the same one Will is currently taking) for a year. Will finishes his second year in university while Jem finishes his third year in his music and history course. Tessa continues to work her part-time job at the library, where she is thankfully entitled to 18 paid months of maternity leave, though she is hopeful that she won’t need the full year and a half.
Tessa has regular check ups at the local hospital, where she is also booked in to give birth in August. Jem and Will attend every check up, no matter what. They are so excited to become fathers and can hardly wait to meet the baby. They have already started on the nursery, even though the baby will be staying in their room for at least the first year.
Right now, Tessa is only a few weeks from her due date which means Jem and Will are on high alert at all times, rushing to get Tessa and the baby’s bags for the hospital, every time she so much as flinches.
At the moment Tessa is sitting on the sofa, trying to read a book, but it seems that Will and Jem may actually have reason to panic now, as for the last hour or so Tessa has been having pains on and off, every 15 minutes, and now they’re starting to get stronger and closer together.
“You started that book an hour ago and you haven’t finished it yet? That’s not like you at all.” Tessa hears Will say in a teasing tone.
“I can’t concentrate, I think we need to go to the hospital, I’ve been having pains on and off the same amount of time apart since I sat down, I think it might be time.” Tessa says, wincing and grasping her stomach as another pain washes over her.
Will’s eyes widen and he springs up from his seat.
“A-Alright, okay I-I’ll get Jem to help you out to the car and I’ll grab the bags.” He stammers, trying not to panic.
On the way to the hospital, Tessa’s water broke and by the time they reached the hospital, the pains were only 5 minutes apart.
Only half an hour after arriving at the hospital, she began to push, clutching both Will and Jem’s hands tightly, as Jem rubbed her back and gave her soothing encouragements, while Will watched what was going on at the bottom of the bed, wide eyed and unable to look away.
Now, after only pushing for about 20 minutes, Tessa feels a weight lift from her and a low cry rings through the room. She sighs in relief, relaxing back into the pillows as Will and Jem well up with tears of joy.
“Oh my god, it’s a boy, it’s a boy, we have a son.” Jem says in a shocked but joyful tone, laughing in delight and wiping his tears away. “He’s so perfect Tess, you did it, he’s here and he’s so beautiful and perfect.” Jem says in a breathy tone, leaning down to kiss her forehead.
Seconds later the baby is placed on Tessa’s chest, and immediately her heart swells with love for him, a love greater than she had ever felt in all her life. She immediately pulls him close to her chest, tears of joy rolling down her cheeks as the baby snuggles into her and his cries die down.
“Hi baby, Hi James, sweet baby Jamie, I love you.” Tessa whispers, kissing his little head. When they had been choosing names, Tessa was instant that the baby have his fathers’ names, but she left it up to Will and Jem to decide which would be his first name and which would be his middle name. Will insisted that his first name be James, and when he wouldn’t budge on that, Jem wanted the baby to have a Chinese middle name, so his middle name is Wēilián, which is William in Mandarin, making his full name James Wēilián Ke Carstairs-Herondale. A big name for a very little boy.
“He looks just like me.” Will softly says in a tone of awe, stroking the baby’s blood soaked cheek. It’s clear that little James is Will’s biological child, with a thick mop of black hair just like his, Will’s pallor, bone structure and eye shape, and Tessa’s nose shape. Later it would turn out he has big grey eyes, just like Tessa.
“He’s perfect.” Jem quietly repeats, as little James wraps his hand around Jem’s finger.
When Tessa had told Will and Jem she was pregnant with James, they had thought that was the biggest shock and surprise of their lives, but they were mistaken. It has been just under a year since James’ birth, one of the best years of their lives, and while the little boy takes his usual afternoon nap, Tessa has called Jem and Will into the bedroom, where they will receive what they are certain is the biggest shock of their lives.
“Is everything alright Tess? Do you want to go to bed for an hour and we’ll keep an ear out for Jamie?” Will asks, closing the door behind he and Jem.
“No, thank you though. Everything is fine but I do need to tell you something.”
“Is it that Cecily is a massive pain in the arse coming around here with Lightworm every day? Believe me Tess, I know, but she’s my sister so I have to love her and put up with her.” Will says with a shrug.
“No that’s not it, I like having Cecily and Gabriel around all the time, they’re great at helping out with Jamie. Anyway, what I need to tell you is... I’m pregnant.” Tessa admits. She could hardly believe it when she saw the positive pregnancy test, she, Will and Jem were very careful about preventing another pregnancy, but clearly they weren’t careful enough.
“What? B-but Jamie’s not even one, I-thought it was pretty much impossible to get pregnant again so soon.” Will stammers, sinking onto the bed beside Tessa.
“No not impossible at all, usually after about six weeks post birth, you can get pregnant again. I know we were careful and everything but clearly it didn’t work.” Tessa says. Like when she was pregnant with Jamie, she is terrified, perhaps even more so now that they’ll have two under two, but she is also extremely excited and eager to meet this little one. In the last year, Jem was able to secure a job in the orchestra for the current production of a long-running musical in the West End, and the theater isn’t far from their apartment. Will got a job as a book editor and mostly works from home, while Tessa still works part-time at the library and attends college part time. Things are more secure now, even if they do have a 9 month old baby, who will only be one and a half when the new baby is born.
“If we have a girl we have to name her after you, since Jamie is named after us.” Jem says, breaking the tension and smiling at Tessa.
“No way, absolutely not, I get final say in baby names since I’m the pregnant one, and I am banning any variation of my name here and now.” Tessa says with a laugh. Though she doesn’t mind her name, she doesn’t want her daughter to have it, she’s always thought Teresa and Tessa are a little plain and bland, she wants something nicer for her daughter, if the baby is a girl.
“Okay but you can’t call her Jemma Wilhelmina or Wilhelmina Jemma either.” Will says in a mock stern tone.
“I say since you picked Jamie’s name, Will gets to pick this baby’s name, and if we have a third, I get to pick their name.” Jem suggests. Will and Tessa nod in agreement, and Tessa relaxes, knowing that in the end, things will work out.
Over the next few months, they tell their family and friends about the baby. Charlotte helps them explain everything to Jamie, but he doesn’t seem to acknowledge it, sometimes he’ll babble to Tessa’s belly and cuddle up to the small bump, but other than that, he’s been behaving as normal.
Just a few weeks after they told Cecily and Gabriel, Cecily had broken the news to them that she too was pregnant. At first Will was furious, ready to hunt Gabriel down and kill him, but once Cecily explained how caring and loving Gabriel has been toward her and the baby, and how excited he is to be a father, Will calmed down, though he is still extremely worried about Cecily.
Once again, Tessa’s pregnancy passes by in a breeze and before she knows it she is just days from her due date.
Currently, she is sitting in the living room of her, Jem and Will’s apartment, with Jamie, Charlotte and Charlotte’s son Matthew, who is two months older than Jamie. Jamie, Matthew and Thomas get along famously, and no doubt Cecily and Gabriel’s daughter will get along with the boys too, when she arrives in just 2 months time.
“Are you’re alright Tessa? You look very pale.” Charlotte asks in a concerned tone, turning her attention from the babies to Tessa, looking at her with eyes full of worry and concern.
“Oh yeah I’m fine just... I don’t know I feel weird, my stomach feels weird but it doesn’t feel like contractions, at least not like the ones I had when Jamie was born.” Tessa says, grimacing at the pain in her stomach and back.
“It could be early labor, when I went into labor with Charles I started feeling pains 2 days before he was born, maybe it wouldn’t hurt to go to the hospital to get checked over, I know Will and Jem are at work, so I can drive you.” Charlotte offers.
“Will Matthew get fussy if you put him in the car?” Tessa asks, glancing at the little blonde haired boy, patting Jem’s cat, Church.
“No not at all, Matthew is the easiest baby on earth, the word fussy does not apply to him, he loves being in the car, he won’t mind at all.” Charlotte assures her.
“Okay, yeah lets go then.”
Half an hour later, Tessa is breathing through her pains (which have been confirmed as contractions) in her hospital bed, while Charlotte expertly manages Jamie and Matthew, while calling Will and Jem to let them know Tessa is in labor.
Jem arrives first, 20 minutes after Charlotte called him, and Will turns up just 10 minutes after Jem. Charlotte then offers to look after Jamie for as long as they need, she and Henry will be happy to have him and Matthew will be delighted to have him for a sleepover. Jem, Tessa and Will readily agree, glad they won’t have to worry about organizing childcare now.
2 hours after being admitted to hospital, an hour after beginning to push, Tessa feels a weight lift from her which is almost immediately followed by a loud, high pitched wail.
Jem is the first to catch a glimpse of the baby, and when he does, his breath hitches in his throat.
“Oh, oh it’s a girl, we have a daughter.” He says in a soft tone.
“She certainly made an entrance, didn’t you sweet girl?” Will coos, wiping at his tears as the baby is placed on Tessa’s chest.
“Hello, hello Lucie, Lucie Āi lā Ke Carstairs. You look just like your mama.” Jem quietly says, stroking the baby’s cheek. Will had finally settled on the name Lucie for a girl ,after Lucie Manette in a Tale Of Two Cities (his and Tessa’s favorite book) and Āi lā, which is Mandarin for Ella, after his older sister who died when he was a child.
“She’s perfect.” Tessa says in a tight tone, holding Lucie close and pressing a kiss to her forehead.
The next day Charlotte brings Jamie in to meet his sister, while Henry stays at home with Matthew and Charles.
“What do you think Jamie?” Tessa softly asks, as James curiously peers into the bundle of blankets in her arms, where Lucie is sleeping peacefully.
“Baby.” Jamie quietly says, pointing to Lucie.
“Yeah this is your baby sister Lucie, do you love her?” Tessa gently asks, running a hand through Jamie’s thick black hair, identical to Will’s. Jamie nods and leans in to kiss Lucie’s forehead, as she reaches a hand out of her blankets and grips tightly to her brother’s finger.
“They’re so sweet.” Jem softly says, watching as Lucie blinks her eyes open and peers up at James with curiosity
“For now, soon they’ll be at eachother’s throats, if they’re anything like Cecily and I.” Will says with a smile, thinking back to when he and Cecily were younger, and how he would always hide her toys and she would always pull his hair.
“You’re so dramatic William, you are such a softie around Cecily, if you hated her as much as you pretend you do, you wouldn’t be so worried about her and the baby.” Jem points out. Will has often confided in him about how worried he is about Cecily and how she will cope as a young mother, and how afraid he is that Gabriel will walk out on her and their daughter and leave her heartbroken.
“She’s okay I suppose, she does have terrible taste in men though, her and Sophie, though Gideon isn’t too bad I suppose.” Will says with a shrug. Realistically he does actually like Gabriel and Gideon, especially Gideon, and he does approve of Cecily choosing to be with Gabriel, but he it’s more fun to tease his sister and annoy the Lightwood brothers than to confess that he actually likes them.
At 33 and 34 years old, Jem and Will were convinced that life had no more big surprises in store for them, they thought Tessa’s announcement of her pregnancy with Jamie followed a year later by her announcement of her pregnancy with Lucie, were the biggest shocks they every had, but once again they were wrong.
It is a sweltering hot day in August of 2013, James is out with Matthew, Thomas, and Cecily and Gabriel’s son Christopher, while Lucie is upstairs, working on her writing. At 16 and 15, both James and Lucie are total bookworms like Will and Tessa, Lucie loves to write fictional stories and has hopes of becoming a published author one day, while James more so likes to write poetry and read any book he can get his hands on. Neither of them have any musical talent or love for music like Jem does, but they never object when he takes his violin out to play.
Jem and Will are sitting in the living room, enjoying the peace and quiet and the absence of arguing children, while Tessa is visiting her friend Catarina Loss, who works at the local hospital where Jamie and Lucie were born.
Just as Jem is thinking of getting up and making a start on dinner so it will be ready when Jamie and Tessa come home, the door creaks open and Tessa steps in, and beams at he and Will.
“Hey, is Jamie still out with the boys?” She asks, making her way over to the sofa to join Jem and Will.
“Yes but he’s text a few times to let us know he’s alright and he’ll be home in a few hours. Did you have a good time with Catarina?” Will asks.
“Yes I did. I have something I want to show you.” Tessa says with a bright smile, slipping her hand into her pocket and drawing out a blurry black and white picture, of something unclear.
“What’s that?” Will asks, furrowing his brow and trying to figure out why Tessa is showing them this odd photo of seemingly nothing.
“Well, it’s our baby.” Tessa quietly says. Now that they are older and much better prepared for a child, she wanted to surprise Will and Jem with the news of her pregnancy and not just call them in and tell them she took a test and it was positive. She had suspected she was pregnant for a few weeks now, and when she booked in for an appointment with Catarina today, she told Jem and Will she was simply going to visit her friend at the hospital, when in actual fact she was going in for a pregnancy test and ultrasound.
“B-baby? You’re pregnant?” Will asks in an incredulous tone. The three of them weren’t exactly trying, but they weren’t doing anything to prevent a pregnancy either, though they had done that for the last five years and he thought perhaps it just wasn’t meant to happen.
“Yes, I’m two months, due in March, everything is perfect with me and the baby.” Tessa softly says, placing a hand on her stomach.
“Oh Lucie is going to be so thrilled.” Jem says in a joyful tone, knowing how much his daughter has wanted a little sibling for some time now. James doesn’t mind the idea of another sibling, but he’s not as eager as Lucie.
“Yes she is, we’ll have to think of a good way to tell her and Jamie, I’ll do some research tonight.” Tessa says, thinking of all the fun and exciting ways she can tell Lucie and James they’re going to have a little sibling soon.
“I finally get to pick a baby name!” Jem says with a wide grin, already knowing what he wants to call this baby, boy or girl.
“Oh God, you’re going to call them something awful like Wolfgang aren’t you?” Will groans.
“Oh no, you’re not naming them something ridiculous like that or Chopin.” Tessa warns Jem, earning a laugh from him with her serious look.
“Calm down you two, I love our child I’m not going to saddle them with an awful name, if I were going to name our son after a musician it would be someone with a decent name, have some faith in me.”
The three of them decide to keep the news to themselves for another month or so, so that the chances of anything happening will have gone down by the time they tell the kids.
By the time they decide to tell them, it’s the middle of September, just a few weeks before Lucie’s 16th birthday, which Tessa sees as the perfect opportunity to tell her she’s going to be a big sister.
Right now Lucie and James are sitting on the sofa in the living room, reading.
“Hey Luc.” Tessa says, walking over to the sofa with a brown paper bag in her hand. Lucie looks up and gives her a quizzical look. “I want to give you an early birthday present, Jamie you might be interested in this too.” Tessa says, handing the bag over to Lucie and sharing a knowing smile with Jem and Will.
James sets his book down as Lucie reaches into the bag, and pulls out a white baby grow and a note.
“What’s the note say?” James curiously asks, trying to read the note over his sister’s shoulder.
“Lucie, you’re finally getting the one thing you’ve always wanted, you’ll just have to wait a few months.” Lucie reads in a confused tone. “What does this mean mum?” She asks, looking up at Tessa.
“What do you think it means?.” Tessa gently asks, brushing Lucie’s hair back from her face. The kids are quiet for a minute, before Jamie’s face lights up in realization.
“You’re pregnant!” He exclaims, adding up the note, the baby grow and the fact that his mum has been sick the last few weeks.
“You are?! Really?” Lucie gasps, looking between Tessa, Will and Jem with wide blue eyes full of hope.
“Yes I am, the baby will be here in March, you’re going to be a big sister.” Tessa softly says, as Lucie jumps up and hugs her tightly.
“You alright there Jamie?” Will asks in an amused tone, clapping his son on the shoulder, noticing the look of shock on his face.
“Y-yeah just wasn’t expecting this.” He says in a shocked voice.
“Pun unintended?” Jem asks in a teasing voice, grinning at his son, who takes minute to understand the joke before smiling back and laughing.
“Can we tell people? Can I tell Cordelia, papa?” Lucie asks in an excited tone, looking at Jem, thinking perhaps he has already told his cousin Cordelia, who recently moved to London and has been best friends with Lucie since they were 10.
“Of course, you can tell your friends too if you like Jamie, you’re the first ones to find out, apart from Catarina since she’s been helping your mum through the first few months of the pregnancy.” Jem says.
Soon, everyone knows about the newest little Carstairs-Herondale on the way, and are very excited and happy.
Thankfully, like both of her other pregnancies, this pregnancy is a breeze for Tessa, she’s had some sickness and aches and pains but thankfully nothing more than usual. Lucie and James always accompany her and their dads on trips to buy clothes and furniture for the baby and help them decorate the nursery and both have been sworn to secrecy on the baby’s name, which they will tell everyone when she is safely here.
Currently Tessa is once again just weeks from her due date, though she is sure the baby will come any day now, since Jamie and Lucie were both a few weeks early too.
Right now Tessa is sitting at her desk in her office, reading over a book she is currently editing and critiquing for a client.
As she writes notes in red pen in the margin, she feels a familiar tightening pain in her lower stomach, one she is not able to work or talk through. Once the pain passes, she sets her pen down and goes in search of Jem and Will, needing someone to drive her to the hospital to make sure the pains are in fact contractions, and knowing that of course, they won’t want to miss a second of this.
When she walks into the music room, Jem looks up from his manuscript and beams brightly at her, his eyes filled with love and adoration.
“Tess.” He softly says, beckoning her over. “I was just writing something for the baby, do you want to hear?”
“Normally I would love, you now how much I adore your music, but I think you’ll be able to play your piece to the baby herself soon, I think I’m having contractions.” Tessa says, leaning against the door frame as her body is wracked with another pain.
Unlike when Jamie was born, Jem manages to stay totally calm. He guides Tessa to a seat, then quickly finds her and the baby’s bags, and then Will and while Will helps Tessa out to the car, he lets Jamie and Lucie know what’s going on, before texting Charlotte, who has promised to check in on Lucie and James while Tessa is in labor.
Unlike her labors with Jamie and Lucie, this time Tessa’s labor is long, drawn out and painful. Her labor lasts a total of 14 hours, which feels like forever compared to 4 and 2 hours.
Tessa was able to start pushing about 3 hours ago, but the baby is taking her time in coming out.
“I don’t think I can do this anymore.” Tessa weakly says, as she rests between contractions, her chest rising and falling rapidly as she tries desperately to catch her breath.
“Of course you can.” Will softly says, dabbing her sweaty forehead with a cold, damp compress.
“But it feels like she’s not budging.” Tessa tries to hold back her tears of pain and frustration.
“Tess, I know it feels like you aren’t getting anywhere but I promise you are, we’re so close to meeting our baby and she is going to be just as perfect as her brother and sister, you are the strongest woman I’ve ever met Tessa, just a few more minutes and you’ll have her in your arms, and Cecily can stop pestering us about her name.” Jem softly and quietly says, squeezing Tessa’s hand encouragingly and leaning his forehead against hers. Tessa gives a weak laugh, then as another contraction begins, she squeezes her eyes shut, grips Will and Jem’s hands and pushes with all her might. Seconds later she feels a weight lift from her, and a soft cry rings around the room.
“You did it Tess! You see, we told you could, you amazing woman you!” Will proudly says, leaning in to kiss her temple, before the baby is placed on her chest.
Right away, it is obvious Jem is her biological father, she looks just like him, even at moments old. With light brown skin just like his, thick black hair but without Will’s curls, Jem’s eye shape and bone structure and Tessa’s mouth and nose shape.
“Oh Jem she looks just like you, she’s so beautiful.” Tessa sobs in delight, holding her baby close and tight.
“Yes she is, but I think she looks like you, you’re so beautiful my sweet Wilhelmina, how could you possibly look like me and not your mummy if you’re so beautiful?” Jem coos, leaning down to kiss his daughter’s forehead, before turning to place a kiss on his wife’s lips.
“Wilhelmina Yiqiang Ke Carstairs-Herondale, you could give your brother a run for his money with such a big name.” Will coos. Despite joking with Tessa when she was pregnant with Lucie, that they shouldn’t name her Wilhelmina after Will, Jem has grown extremely fond of the name over the years, and both Will and Tessa like it too, so they settled on that for her first name, and Yiqiang means ‘Remember’ in Mandarin, which Jem chose to honor their loved ones who have passed away, his parents, Tessa’s parents and brother and Will’s sister.
“Little Mina mine, I love you.” Jem softly says, stroking Mina’s thick, dark hair.
The next day, just after Mina has finished her morning feed, and Will is winding her while Jem is in the clothes shop next to the hospital, buying a fresh shirt after Mina threw up on him and Tessa is in the en suite bathroom getting changed, there is a light knock on the open door, and when Will looks up, he sees James and Lucie standing there, smiling brightly, next to Charlotte who is holding a gift bag, also smiling brightly.
“Hello you two!” Will says in a joyful tone. “Come meet your sister.”
Part two coming soon, where Mina will meet her siblings and all her aunts, uncles and cousins!
“You’re worried they’re turning into mundanes? Really, Will, that’s a bit prejudiced of you.” - Tessa to Will in This Living Hand (chapter 3, Chain Of Gold)
me, thinking about the fact that we have no idea where Matthew will eventually end up:
I just received the 10th anniversary edition of Clockwork Angel as a gift (I literally started screeching) and let me tell you I am so fucking pissed that books only have one first page and one last page cause they could only put Tessa drawing (obviously, since she is the main character) and one of the two men and they chose Will's (I'm not even that mad cause I have a very very very soft spot for him, but), BUT JEM IS- I MEAN HOW COULD THE INVENTOR OF BOOKS PUT ONLY TWO FUCKING PAGES DEPRIVING JEM OF HIS RIGHT TO BE NEXT TO THEM
I wanted to ask you, are you going to post a new short story any time soon?
I'm hoping to! I had one ready to go but then it deleted on me. I'm trying to work on the one about Jem opening a charity shop to help fund rehab centres, but I just cant get it right. I also have part one of my Herongraystairs modern mundane Au done so I might post that, if people are interested?
Shadowhunters Short Story #55. Toddler Mina Carstairs feat. Big Sister Mina.
It is a cool September afternoon in Devon 2015, a year and a half after Mina Carstairs was born, when Tessa Carstairs receives one of the biggest shocks of her life.
Over the past couple of weeks Tessa has been feeling odd, her main symptoms are getting light-headed and having dizzy spells, and while at first she wasn’t worried, after the symptoms did not ease after a few weeks, she decided to have Catarina book her in at the local hospital, where she now works part time, while teaching at The Scholomonce the other half of the time. Jem had wanted to come with her today but Tessa insisted there was no need and that he should stay at home with Kit and Mina so they wouldn’t have to ask Emma to come to Devon to watch Mina and keep an eye on Kit. Though Kit is almost 16, Tessa and Jem are extremely protective of him and are reluctant to leave him home alone, especially with Mina, not because they don’t trust him but because he is still vulnerable and probably still being hunted by someone from Faerie, even if The Riders are gone, there are others who want to get their hands on the lost heir.
So just half an hour ago Tessa had left Jem tutoring Kit on Shadowhunter history while Mina played with her toys, at their feet.
When she had told Catarina about her symptoms, the first thing Catarina wanted to do was a blood test, suspecting that her friend was simply low on iron, which can easily happen after having a baby. Thankfully it would only take a few hours or less for Tessa to get the blood test results back, and since she was Catarina’s last client for the day, she stayed in the hospital with her friend, helping her to clean up the exam room and set up for tomorrow.
“Is Mina walking yet? She was very close to it last time I visited.” Catarina asks her friend, as they change the paper on the exam bed.
“Not entirely, she’ll take a few steps on her own but then she seems to get scared and just plop back down, she’ll walk a good bit holding Jem, Kit or I’s hand and she loves to cruise along the couch but she’s not so keen on doing it on her own.” Tessa says in an amused tone, picturing her little Mina clutching tightly to her big brother’s fingers as he helps her walk across the room or down the driveway to collect the post.
“My Ephraim was the same, he didn’t walk on his own until he was 18 months, anytime I let go while he was walking while holding my hand, he would just fall down and start crawling again, they certainly know how to get what they want.” Catarina lightly says, still able to picture her son’s tiny little hand in hers, wobbling alongside her as they walked through the town.
“That they certainly do, Mina has Jem and Kit wrapped around her little finger, if she so much as coughs during the night, both of them are at her side in a minute flat.” Tessa laughs, knowing that Mina knows full well if she makes even the smallest noise, her daddy and brother will come rushing to her and give her whatever she wants.
An hour after Catarina sent Tessa’s blood sample to the lab, she goes to pick up her results and comes back with a look on her face that says she knows something.
“What? What’s that look for?” Tessa suspiciously asks, hoping that all is normal with her results.
“Has your cycle gone back to normal since having Mina?” Catarina asks, shutting the door behind her and sitting beside her friend.
“Not entirely, why?” Tessa asks in a confused tone.
“Oh it just explains why you didn’t figure this out sooner.” Catarina nonchalantly says, lightly shrugging her shoulders as she scans the clipboard with Tessa’s results on them.
“Figure what out? What are you talking about Cat?” Tessa asks, close to frustration.
“You’re pregnant.” A wave of shock washes over Tessa, she can hardly believe her ears. Like they had before Tessa got pregnant with Mina, she and Jem agreed that they weren’t going to try and prevent a pregnancy, but they weren’t going to actively try for a baby either, but they so rarely had the chance to be intimate anymore, with Mina between them most nights and both of them being extremely busy during the day, it had been at least 2 months since they had slept together, and Tessa had felt non of the symptoms she had with Mina.
“But it’s been months I... I didn’t think it would happen so soon.” Tessa quietly says, still in shock.
“2 months I’m guessing, since that’s how far along you are, and there is one more thing you ought to know.” Catarina says, looking at the results on her chart.
“W-what is it?” Tessa weakly asks.
“Your HCG levels are very high, which gives me reason to believe you’re having twins.” Catarina softly says. Tessa feels as if she may pass out from shock. Finding out she is pregnant was one thing, but finding out it’s twins is something else entirely.
“A-Are you sure?” She breathlessly asks.
“Well I’ll need to do an ultrasound to be sure but I don’t see why else your HCG levels would be so high.” Catarina explains.
“Can... can we do the ultrasound now?” Tessa weakly asks, needing to know for a fact if she is having twins or not.
Twenty minutes later, Tessa is trying to see as much of the screen of the ultrasound machine as she can, from her position on the exam bed, but she can’t make out much.
“There you have it, that’s Baby A, and that’s Baby B, everything looks perfect with all three of you.” Catarina gently says, pointing out the two little blobs on the screen. Tessa starts to tear up when she sees her babies, the shock wearing off, her heart swelling with love for these two new babies that she will soon be able to hold and kiss and snuggle, she can hardly wait.
When she arrives home, she finds Kit sitting on the sofa with Mina in his lap, her attention fixed on the T.V. where The Book Thief movie is playing.
“Read that book.” Tessa lightly says, standing behind the sofa Kit is sat on, leaning down to kiss Mina and ruffle Kit’s hair. Kit grins up at her in delight and instantly shoots back
“Saw that movie.”
“I have no idea what either of you are talking about.” Jem chimes in as he walks into the living room, grinning at his wife and children.
“Lies, I saw you reading the book last week!” Kit replies, as Mina reaches up for Jem to lift her.
“You caught me out, thanks to you, your old man is becoming quiet well versed in pop culture.” Jem lightly says, lifting Mina and settling her on his hip.
“Jem you still call every social media site ‘The Facebook’”. Kit laughs. Copying her brother as usual, Mina smiles widely, clumsily claps her hands in delight and giggles loudly, showing off the few teeth she has.
“Oh you think daddy’s ignorance is funny now too, do you? I don’t see you knowing how to work an iPhone either Mina mine.” Jem teases his daughter, lightly tickling her chest, causing her to shriek with laughter and wriggle away from him.
“Jem can I talk to you for a minute?” Tessa quietly asks her husband, laying a hand on his arm and smiling at he and Mina.
“Of course, you go back to your big brother Mina, Kit maybe you could put something a little more child friendly on?” Jem lightly asks, passing Mina back to Kit.
“If I have to watch one more episode of Peppa Pig I’m going to loose it, how about we facetime Clary and Jace instead Min-Min?” Kit says, holding his sister with one arm and fishing his phone from his pocket with the other.
“Ace!” Mina exclaims in delight. Being only one and a half, Mina hasn’t mastered talking yet and can’t pronounce ‘J’ or a lot of other letters, which has led to some rather adorable nicknames. She calls Jace ‘Ace’, Simon ‘Imon’ Emma ‘Memma’ and Julian ‘Ules’.
As Kit and Mina wait for Clary and Jace to pick up, Tessa and Jem head into the kitchen, which is just opposite the living room.
“How did everything go at the hospital?” Jem asks, leaning back against the kitchen table. Tessa slips one of the ultrasound pictures from her pocket, that Catarina had printed out for her, and passes it to Jem.
“Do you know what this is?” She asks, watching Jem screw up his face in confusion.
“Something Mina painted with Julian?” He guesses, not able to decipher any particular shapes or images, just seeing a mass of blurry black and white. Tessa laughs and shakes her head.
“No James, you’re going to find that hilarious when I tell you what it actually is.”
“Then what is it?” Tessa beams up at Jem, takes his free hand and presses it to her stomach.
“Its an ultrasound, I’m pregnant.” Jem’s face immediately lights up with delight, before he pulls his wife closer to him, hugging her tightly and laughing with joy.
“Really? So this is a picture of our baby?” He eagerly asks, pulling back and looking at the image in his hand, now trying to make out their baby.
“Actually, it’s a picture of our babies.” Tessa softly says. It takes Jem a moment to register what Tessa has said, but when he does, his eyes widen in disbelief.
“Babies? Twins?” He asks in a breathy tone. Tessa laughs lightly as she laces her arms around the back of his neck and nods.
“That’s right, twins.” Jem shakes his head in disbelief, though unable to wipe the smile from his face.
“Oh my god, oh my god we’re going to have four kids, three of them under three, I’m going to be a dad of four!” Jem says in a tone of shock and disbelief. Tessa laughs and leans in to kiss his cheek.
“Yes you are, lets go tell the other two shall we?” Jem grins broadly and nods, taking Tessa’s hand in his as they walk back out into the living room, where Mina is sitting in Kit’s lap, facing him, smiling and giggling as she listens to him tell her stories about when she was a baby, like the time he tripped over her blanket and almost dropped her and then cursed in front of her.
“Reminds me of when Lucie would crawl into James’ bed in the middle of the night when they were little, and tell him stories to help him fall asleep.” Tessa softly and quietly says to Jem, remembering the mornings when she would go to wake her daughter only to find her bed empty, and Lucie snuggled up next to her big brother in his bed.
“Kit and Mina have just as special of bond as James and Lucie did, I remember coming to give Lucie her three week check up and James was lying on a blanket on the floor by her bassinet, when I asked him what he was doing, he told me he was protecting his sister.” Jem replies, his heart aching for James and Lucie, the first two children he ever loved and who will always hold a special place in his heart. They are as much his children as they are Will and Tessa’s and Mina and Kit are as much Will’s children as they are Tessa and Jem’s.
“Ugh they’re so soppy aren’t they Mina?” Kit teases, grinning at his parents as he holds Mina up and blows a raspberry on her cheek, which makes her scream with laughter.
“Mina you are going to burst somebody’s eardrum with your squeals, is this an indication that we have a little soprano on our hands hm? Are you going to be a musician like daddy?” Tessa coos, taking a seat next to Kit and kissing her daughter’s cheek.
“Of course she is, and a bookworm like her mummy and big brother James, and a writer like her sister, and probably a painter too if Julian and Clary have anything to do with it, and how could I forget that this one here will probably have her picking locks before her second birthday.”Jem jokingly says, ruffling Kit’s hair as he takes a seat next to his wife and children.
“She can already climb out of her crib. I wonder who taught her that?” Tessa teasingly says, taking Mina from Kit when she reaches for her.
“Actually I think that was Anna.” Kit says, settling back against the couch cushions, referring to Magnus and Alec’s two year old daughter who they adopted at a few months old, just after Mina was born.
“And I’m sure you’re teaching her how to be a good big sibling.” Tessa softly says. Just a few weeks ago Magnus and Alec had adopted a little Shadowhunter boy they named Henry, and his siblings are infatuated with him, especially his sister.
“What would you think about having another sibling Kit?” Jem carefully asks, stopping Mina from climbing up on to the back of the sofa.
“I wouldn’t mind, I think Mina would be a great big sister, but I don’t think she’d like having to share our attention, especially not mine.” Kit grins, loving how attached Mina is to him and how close they are.
“What about having two new siblings?” Tessa asks. She is not sure how she and Jem should go about telling their teenager that she’s pregnant, Jamie wasn’t even a year old when Tessa had gotten pregnant with Lucie, and when Tessa was pregnant with Mina she and Jem assumed Emma had told Kit about her, so didn’t make a point of specifically telling him, when they offered for him to move in with them.
Kit laughs and says
“You guys are getting ahead of yourselves aren’t you? What, are we going to be like The Von Trapp family?” Tessa smiles weakly and says
“Haven’t read that book because there is no book version, but I have read the movie script.” Kit smiles and shakes his head.
“Of course you did, you would read the back of food cartons for fun.” He teases.
“Your mother could write a book about her life and with all the books she’s read she’d be able to do it in her sleep.” Jem says, putting an arm around his wife.
“You could, and should, it would be a hit! You could write the first book about your life in London and about how you met Jem and Will and stuff and then you and Magnus and Catarina and Ragnor could write a sequel about your life after all that, then you could write a third book in a few years when Mina and I are older and have given you a few more gray hairs.” Tessa smiles at her son, her heart warming at his enthusiasm for her to write a book, and his belief in her.
“I could but it’s going to have to wait a while if I want to start this year, I don’t fancy trying to write and edit a book while pregnant with twins.” Tessa tells him, her hand coming to rest on her stomach. Kit’s eyes widen and he sits up straight, looking from Tessa to Jem in disbelief.
“Woah woah woah back up, is this why you were asking me all those questions about having another sibling? You’re really pregnant? With twins?” He asks in a shocked tone. Tessa nods and says
“Yes I am, that’s why I’ve been feeling off lately, dizzy spells are a symptom I always get when pregnant, but I never get it this early so that’s why I didn’t realize until I got the blood test results back this afternoon.”
“Damn, you guys really don’t mess about, Mina’s not even two yet and you’re going to have two more, and James was one when Lucie was born, you must love having kids with a small age gap.” Kit says, his heart fluttering with excitement at the idea of being a big brother again.
“Well actually this last year and a half we’ve both come to realize we really enjoy having a bigger age gap between our kids, we were thinking of waiting until Mina is at least three if not four, before we had another, but that just wasn’t meant to be it seems, and now we’re going to have three under three, which is quiet daunting.” Jem says in a nervous tone. He and Tessa will have to speak to Magnus and Alec, last year they adopted Anna and then just a few weeks ago they adopted Henry, they have 4 kids under 7, they’ll be able to give them some good advice on how to cope with all the little ones they’re about to have in their house.
“Don’t worry, I’ll be here to help out all the time, and I’m sure Emma is going to practically move in when the babies are born, like she did when Mina was born, and Min-Min is going to be a great big sister, she’ll love the babies so much, you guys aren’t going to be on your own, I’m always going to be around to help out with my siblings, weather the twins are the last or you have 10 more, being a big brother is the best thing I’ve ever done and I’ll never stop loving it.” Tears well in Tessa’s eyes at Kit’s heartfelt promise and they soon start to trickle down her face. Jem, knowing how emotional his wife gets in early pregnancy, pulls her closer, kisses her cheek and rubs her back.
“It’s alright love, don’t worry about getting upset in front of Mina, she needs to know it’s okay to be upset and cry sometimes, right?” Jem softly and quietly says.
“Tessa are you okay? Did I say something to upset you?” Kit asks in an anxious tone.
“Oh no, no baby you didn’t upset me, I’m not upset at all, these are happy tears, I’m so happy to have you and I feel so honored to get to raise you and love you, you’re such an amazing young man and I just could not be more proud of you.” Tessa quietly says, wiping at her tears.
“Stop it you’re going to make me feel things too, I hate feeling things.” Kit jokes, holding back his own tears of joy, taking Mina from Jem and holding her in front of him so no one can see if he does start to cry.
“What do you think Mina mine, are you excited to be a big sister?” Jem asks, running his hand over Mina’s dark curls. Mina nods enthusiastically, gripping onto Kit’s shirt tightly. Kit kisses Mina’s cheek and jokingly says
“Two more of you huh? How am I going to cope?” Mina giggles loudly and pats Kit’s face with one hand, reaching up to grab a handful of hair with the other, causing her brother to hiss in pain and try to untangle her hand. “Ah Mina let go, you’re going to rip my hair out, if I have to show up to my date with Ty bald, I’m going to blame you, you’ll have to explain to him why his boyfriend is balding at sixteen.” Kit teases, tickling Mina’s stomach, making her release his hair and squirm away.
“You won’t tell Ty or anyone else about the twins just yet will you? It’s still early and we want to be sure everything is okay.” Tessa quietly asks.
“No of course not, believe me, I love you guys but the last thing I’m going to discuss on my date, is your pregnancy.” Tessa smiles and leans over to kiss her son on the cheek.
“You’re such a sweet boy.” She softly says, causing Kit to blush furiously.
“I am not, I am a tough, moody, sarcastic, angsty man.” Kit firmly says.
“It’s like living with a blonde, American Will.” Jem says to Tessa.
“Will says he always thought he’d look good as a blonde but Tess told him if he dared to dye his hair blonde she’d leave him.” Kit says, passing on the message Will’s ghost (who often hangs around to see Mina, who can see him) had given him.
“I most certainly did, and James and Lucie said they would disown him, as did Cecily. James was ready to ask Henry to adopt him, as was Lucie.” Tessa says with a smile. “I better go call Magnus and tell him he’s going to be an Uncle again.” Tessa then adds, getting to her feet and heading upstairs, leaving her boys and baby girl to have some quality time together.
The next few months are hectic for The Carstairs’, Tessa’s pregnancy is not as smooth and easy as it had been when she was pregnant with Mina. This time she has many more aches and pains and is much more uncomfortable, when she was pregnant with Mina she nursed Shadowhunters and Downworlders who had fought against The Cohort and their allies in the Unseelie Court, this time around she can hardly get up the stairs and dress Mina. Kit is an amazing help, always willing to feed and dress Mina and play with her, while Jem tends to Tessa.
On top of that, this last week, Mina has been sick with a cold and is being extremely clingy toward Jem and extra fussy, she’s off her food and finding it very difficult to sleep at night, Jem is usually up walking the floor with her at all hours, while Tessa lies awake with hip pain, wishing she could do more to help her daughter feel better.
Right now, Jem is lying on his and Tessa’s bed, with Mina curled up on his chest, sucking her thumb and dozing in and out of sleep. Jem’s heart is breaking into pieces, seeing his daughter so unwell and miserable, he would do anything to make her feel better, which is why he’s more than willing to get up with her at all hours of the night, he never thought he’d get to be a father, his Mina is his little miracle and he will forever be grateful for her and do anything he can for her.
“Daddy.” Mina quietly whines, snuggling further into Jem, wiping her nose on his shirt.
“Daddy’s here Mina mine, it’s alright.” Jem softly says, rubbing her back gently.
“Story?” Mina hopefully asks, looking up at Jem and batting her long dark lashes at him. Mina loves to listen to her mummy and daddy tell her stories about her brother and sister, about her aunties and uncles and about her cousins, she specifically loves hearing stories about her daddy and Uncle Will and how her Uncle Will would always do silly things to summon her daddy when he was a Silent Brother.
“What story would you like to hear?” Jem asks. Mina contemplates this for a moment, before saying
“Ucie.” Jem smiles at Mina’s adorable mispronunciation of her sister’s name and starts into a story about some of the mischief Lucie had gotten into when she was young.
A few days later Mina is feeling much better and is back to her normal self, much to everyone’s relief. Tessa, however, is still feeling pretty awful and has started getting some bad headaches as well as all her other aches and pains. She is 36 weeks this week and has an appointment with Catarina today. Normally Tessa drives herself to her appointments while Jem stays home with the kids, however these last few weeks, Tessa has not been able to fit her bump behind the wheel, so Jem is going to drive her, then do some shopping with Mina and Kit, go home for a while and pick Tessa up when she’s finished at the hospital.
“Are you sure you don’t want me to wait in the car for you?” Jem asks Tessa, as they walk out to the car where Kit is already strapping Mina into her car seat.
“I’m sure, you know how much Mina hates being in the car, I could be hours here and she won’t tolerate being in the car longer than 20 minutes, I’ll be with Catarina, I’ll be just fine.” Tessa assures her husband in a soft tone, as he helps her into the car.
“How come you have an appointment every week now Tess? You didn’t have this many with Mina.” Kit curiously asks, as Tessa tries to fit the seat belt around her swollen stomach.
“Well because things can be more complicated with twins, this pregnancy is high-risk because of the complications I had early on and because it’s twins, with multiples the chances of premature birth and complication are much higher, so now that it’s drawing closer to my due date, it’s essential to keep a closer eye on them.” Tessa explains, as Jem pulls out of the drive.
“Oh, oh you know Helen had the baby? Dru text me this morning.” Kit says, having just read the text from Dru telling him that Helen and Aline’s baby had been born last night, healthy and full term.
“Boy or girl?” Jem asks, looking at his son in the rear view mirror.
“Girl, Delilah Eloise Pennhallow-Blackthorn.” Kit tells them, while quickly typing out a reply to Dru.
“Her that Mina? You’ve got a new cousin.” Tessa says in an excited tone, turning around to smile at Mina, who claps her hands clumsily and smiles widely.
Half an hour later, Tessa is sitting in the exam room with Catarina, listing off the symptoms she’s been having since she last saw her.
“I have to say I’ve been feeling quiet awful these last few weeks, this week specifically I’ve been dizzy and getting awful headaches, and my ankles are so swollen I can hardly fit into my shoes anymore.” Tessa tells Catarina, running a hand down her stomach. Catarina looks at Tessa with eyes full of concern and says
“That’s not good Tess, surely you know that?”
“It’s not great but it’s not awful.” Tessa nonchalantly says.
“Tessa you worked as a midwife for years, surely you know that all these symptoms your having are all warning signs of preeclampsia?” Catarina softly asks, not wanting to frighten her friend but needing her to realize how serious this is. Tessa’s eyes widen and fill with fear and dread.
“Oh my god, I-I forgot, it’s been so long and I’ve constantly been comparing these symptoms to the symptoms I had the last three times, I had headaches with Mina and dizzy spells with Lucie and my ankles were swollen with all three.” She quietly says.
“Lets check your blood pressure and do a urine test, those two things will tell us for sure.” Catarina gently says, squeezing her friend’s hand encouragingly.
Twenty minutes later, Jem and Kit are walking through Aldi with Mina sitting in the trolley, taking in her surroundings. They’ve only been here about 20 minutes and already they’ve been stopped multiple times by people admiring Mina.
“Do you need anything in particular Kit?” Jem asks, as they walk through the aisles of the shop.
“A good night’s sleep would be great.” Kit says in a flat tone. Jem chuckles and says
“I’m afraid they don’t sell those, anything that you can buy that you need?” Kit shakes his head.
“Nope, is it okay if I go to LA later to see Ty and meet the new baby? Magnus said he’ll open a portal for me, so Tessa won’t have to ware herself out doing it.” Kit asks.
“Of course. Do you think your mother already has this book or should we get it for her?” Jem asks, picking up a mystery novel that’s on sale for £5.
“Even if she already has it she’ll be more than happy to have a second copy, I can’t count how many copies of A Tale Of Two Cities she has.” Kit says, picking Mina’s dummy up from where she dropped it on the floor.
“Good point.” Jem says, adding the book to the trolley. Just then he feels a vibrating in his pocket, his phone going off. He fishes his phone out and quickly answers it, not looking at the caller ID.
“Hello?” He answers, as Kit takes over the trolley for him.
“Jem, its me.” Tessa’s voice comes through the line.
“Oh are you finished? Kit, Mina and I are almost done shopping, we keep getting stopped by people admiring Mina, our daughter just gets more and more popular, we should be there in about 20 minutes.” Jem calmly says, having not noticed the wobble in Tessa’s tone when she answered.
“No, James listen to me. You know how I’ve been having headaches and dizzy spells and my ankles have been swollen?” Tessa asks, trying to keep her voice steady.
“Yes.” Jem says, not sure where she’s going with this. Tessa sniffles and says
“Well um.. turns out those were symptoms of preeclampsia, which I have. Catarina contacted the London Institute had them send for a Silent Brother, and in Brother Enoch and Catarina’s opinion the best thing to do is induce me, and that’s not all. Baby A is breech, they might have to do a C-section.” Jem almost drops the phone in shock, he feels as if his world is about to come crashing down at any minute. His wife is seriously ill, she may have to have major surgery and they’re going to have two premature babies.
“I’ll be right there.” Jem firmly says, before hanging up and turning back to Kit, who is looking at him with eyes full of worry.
“Is everything okay?” He quietly asks. Jem shakes his head and runs a hand through his hair.
“Tessa has preeclampsia, it’s extremely dangerous and could kill her and the babies, Brother Enoch and Catarina are going to induce her, but one of the babies is breech so she might need to have a C-section.” Jem explains as calmly as he possibly can. “I need to get to her, on the way to the hospital can you text or call Emma and ask her to come to Devon to stay with you and Mina at home? I don’t know how long your mother and I will be staying in the hospital, especially since the twins are a month premature.” Kit nods and quickly unbuckles Mina from the trolley, lifts her into his arms and follows Jem out to the car.
40 minutes after arriving at the hospital, after changing into a hospital gown and being assigned a room, Tessa begins to feel contractions, as if her body knows how essential it is to get these babies out soon. The contractions are slow and far apart, but very painful.
As Tessa lies on her side in the hospital bed, gripping the handle that stretches from the side to the head of the bed as a contraction tears through her, she hears fast approaching footsteps, followed by Jem’s voice.
“Tess! By The Angel, are you okay?”He asks, dropping to his knees beside her and clasping her hand in his.
“As okay as I can be.” Tessa says in a taut tone, scrunching her face up in pain. “Where are Kit and Mina?” She asks, once the pain has passed.
“In the waiting room, but Magnus is opening a portal for Emma, she’s just packing a bag, she’s agreed to stay and watch Mina and Kit for as long as we need, she’s going to portal here and drive the kids home in our car.” Jem calmly explains, smoothing Tessa’s hair back. “What’s going to happen?” He adds.
“C-Catarina and Brother Enoch think it’s best that they’re the ones who handle this the rest of the way, t-they’re willing to let me try and have a natural birth b-but they think it’s best we go to the OR anyway, that way if I do need an e-emergency C-section, they can do it faster and get the babies out as soon as possible.” Jem nods his understanding and agreement and asks
“Have they induced you yet?” Tessa shakes her head.
“I-I went into labor on my own, my waters haven’t broken but I’ve been having steady contractions for a while now.” Jem bends to kiss his wife’s forehead and softly says
“It’ll be alright, I won’t let anything happen to the three of you.”
Over the next few hours, both Tessa and the babies are constantly monitored and checked on frequently by Catarina and Brother Enoch. Catarina has arranged for a few people from NICU and pediatrics to be at the birth too, just in case the babies need to be taken straight to NICU or anything like that.
After 6 hours of grueling labor, Tessa is ready to give birth. Her bed is wheeled into the OR, and while Jem scrubs up, Catarina helps her onto the table and to get comfortable. When Jem comes in wearing green scrubs, a surgical mask and a surgical cap, Tessa can’t help but laugh and pull him in for a kiss.
“You look adorable.” She giggles. Jem smiles and pecks her cheek. “So do you, and so will our babies.” He slips his hand into hers and squeezes it lightly.
A few minutes later, Tessa begins to push. She only pushes for about 20 minutes, before Baby A makes their way into the world, feet first. The baby immediately starts to cry, and is whisked away by an assisting nurse, to be weighed and checked over.
“Oh are they okay?” Tessa asks, straining to get a glimpse of her baby.
“It seems so, you have a girl Tessa.” Catarina softly says.
“Mina’s going to be thrilled.” Jem quietly says, stroking Tessa’s hair back from her face. The odd time Mina has shown an interest in having new siblings, she has made it very clear she wants at least one of them to be a girl.
10 minutes later, after another round of pushing, Baby B enters the world, kicking and screaming.
“Well this little one certainly has a good pair of lungs!” Catarina laughs, handing the baby over to the assisting nurse, to check them over.
“Boy or girl?” Jem excitedly asks. Catarina grins and says
“A girl, two beautiful, healthy little girls.” Tessa laughs lightly and quietly says
“Kit is going to be so thrilled that he’s still the only boy.”
“And Mina is going to be so happy that both babies are girls. I can’t believe we have three daughters, you did amazingly today Tess, you’re like a superhero from those movies Kit likes.” Jem softly says, focusing all his attention on his amazing wife, who just a few hours ago was diagnosed with one of the most terrifying aliments, and then went on to deliver twins, one of which was breach.
“Are the babies okay? Do they need to go to the NICU?” Tessa asks in a tired voice, hardly able to keep her eyes open but desperate to see and meet her babies.
“Both girls are very healthy, Baby A is 5 pounds 10 ounces and Baby B is 5 pounds 8 ounces, we’ll need to take them for some tests later but for now you should have some quality time with them, they don’t need to go to NICU so they can go back to your room with you.” Catarina informs Tessa, causing a wave of relief to wash over her, and all the stress she had been feeling since she was diagnosed that morning, lifts from her.
Just half an hour later, Tessa and the babies are back in the hospital room where Tessa had labored, both babies are snuggled up inside Tessa’s gown, happy and content as can be.
“You’re one happy mama aren’t you?” Jem quietly asks his wife, gazing at her and their babies in awe. Tessa smiles softly and nods.
“Of course I am, I have my babies at last.”
“Do you still like the two girls names we chose before they were born?” Jem softly asks, stroking Baby A’s dark tufts of hair. Tessa nods and quietly says
“Jade Ai Ke Carstairs for Baby A, and Charlotte An Ke Carstairs for Baby B.” Jem grins and leans down to softly kiss each of his daughters on the forehead. “I should let Emma know these two are here safe and sound, she and Kit are probably worrying themselves silly.” Jem says, picking up his phone from the tray beside Tessa’s bed.
At The Carstairs’ home in Devon, Emma is sitting on the floor with Mina in her lap, trying to distract herself from worrying about Tessa and the babies by face timing Cristina and Mark (Kieran is in Faerie) who Mina adores. Meanwhile Kit is on the sofa on his phone, probably texting Dru and Ty.
“Any news about Tessa and the babies, Em?” Cristina asks, having heard all about Tessa’s preeclampsia diagnoses from Emma, before she rushed off to Devon this morning.
“Not yet, I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing or if Jem just forgot he has a phone, again and can contact me or Kit in a few seconds.” Emma replies in a weary tone. She adores Jem, but sometimes she despairs of his technological ignorance, she and Kit have tried everything to get him to use his phone but he keeps forgetting, he started writing out a birth announcement two years ago when Mina was born, before Tessa and Kit reminded him that they could just text everyone.
“My mother had preeclampsia with Dru, she was born a couple weeks early too but everything was perfectly fine with both of them, I’m sure Tessa and her babies will be just fine too.” Mark gently reassures Emma. Just then Emma receives a text notification from Jem and her heart skips a beat.
“I just got a text from Jem, I’ll call you guys back in a bit okay?” Emma quickly says, hanging up before either of her friends can answer her. When she opens the message the first thing she sees is a picture of Tessa lying in a hospital bed dressed in a hospital gown, which is open at the top. Inside the gown are two little bundles of pink and white, and Jem has captioned the image ‘Jade Ai Ke Carstairs and Charlotte An Ke Carstairs were born at 4:23 p.m and 4:30 p.m. this evening, Tessa did an amazing job and was able to deliver them naturally like she wanted, both babies and Tessa are doing perfect, I’ll call you tomorrow to arrange for Mina and Kit to come meet the girls, and you of course.’
Emma immediately sets Mina down and quickly makes her way over to the sofa and hands her phone to Kit. Kit furrows his brow in confusion but then he quickly scans the message and a smile breaks out over his face.
“Oh thank god.” He quietly says, pulling the earphones from his ears. “Two more sisters, I’m gonna go broke spoiling these three.” Emma smiles and lightly shoves his shoulder.
“How do you think my bank account is going to cope? I have Mina and the twins to buy for, and Delilah, and I can hardly forget The Lightwood-Bane kids and Stephen and Lucie.” She says, thinking of Clary and Jace’s 2 year old daughter Lucie and their 5 month old son Stephen.
“And me, don’t forget me.” Kit teases, lifting Mina into his lap when she comes toddling up.
“My gift to you is stopping Julian lecturing you about treating Ty right.” Emma smiles, knowing how worried and protective Julian is of his siblings.
“Fair enough, hey Min-Min, you want to see a picture of your sisters?” Kit asks in an excited tone, lightly bouncing Mina in his lap. Mina’s eyes widen and she nods enthusiastically. Emma pulls the picture back up on her phone and holds it out for Mina to see.
“Mama!” Mina exclaims in delight, pointing to Tessa in the picture, hardly noticing the babies.
“Yeah that’s mama, and your sisters.”Emma softly says, running a hand over Mina’s silky dark hair.
“Ove mama, Ove babies.” Mina says in a wistful tone, clearly missing her mama very much. This is the longest Tessa has been away from Mina since she was born, when Mina was smaller, Tessa would often tuck her into a sling or baby carrier and take her to The Spiral Labyrinth with her, where she was always met with love and adoration. Though now she’s older and walking and getting into everything, Tessa has opted not to take her to The Spiral Labyrinth when she has work, because if she takes an eye off her daughter for one second, Mina will have the place in chaos.
“They love you too Min-Min.” Emma softly says.
Later that evening, just as Emma has put Mina to bed and Kit is reading her a story, she gets a call from Jem. He gives her updates on Tessa and the babies and they arrange a time for she, Mina and Kit to come meet the babies tomorrow. Jem also tells her that he’ll be staying at the hospital with Tessa and the babies tonight, mundanes don’t usually allow it but Catarina has managed to persuade the Matron to allow Jem to stay just for tonight.
Early the next morning, Emma wakens first, she has a shower then wakes Mina and goes downstairs to get breakfast for them both. An hour later Kit is just coming down, when Emma is strapping Mina into her stroller, ready to take her with her for a walk.
“I’m going to take Mina with me on my walk, there’s pancakes on the stove and porridge in the microwave, I’ll have my phone so call me if you need me, we’re going to the hospital at 11 to see Tessa and meet the babies.” Emma informs Kit, checking that Mina is happy and secure in her stroller. Kit simply nods, still half asleep, not understanding how anyone can be this awake and chipper so early.
While out on her walk, Emma decides to go the bakery Jem has taken Mina to all the time since she was born, and pick up some breakfast for he and Tessa, she can’t imagine hospital food is very nice, if it’s anything like the food served in The Basilias, (Which is now located in New York, since The Shadowhunters no longer have access to Idris.)
When Emma steps into the bakery with Mina on her hip (The buggy was too bulky to fit inside the small shop so she left it outside) the two ladies working there, smile brightly at her.
“Hello again little Mina! And Emma right? Jem’s sister?” The lady with the name tag that reads ‘Catherine’ asks. Emma smiles and nods as Mina claps her hands in delight.
“Yeah that’s right, I see my niece is still a very popular little girl.” Emma lightly says, smiling at Mina.
“So Jem tells us, he tells us he and his wife are constantly stopped by people fussing over Mina. Where is Jem today?” Catherine asks.
“He’s at the hospital with Tessa- his wife- she just had twins last night, a month early so I’m watching Mina and Kit and I thought I’d come in here before we head to the hospital to see the babies, and pick up some breakfast for Jem and Tessa.” Emma explains.
“Oh I knew it wouldn’t be long, the last time Tessa was in here she looked completely ready to have those babies, poor girl was in so much pain.” Catherine says in a sympathetic tone.
“She was actually diagnosed with preeclampsia yesterday, that’s why the babies are early.” Emma says, shifting Mina in her arms as she starts to get cranky and fussy.
“Oh that’s awful, are she and the babies alright?” The other lady asks.
“Yeah thankfully all three are fine.” Emma says.
“Would you like Jem’s usual order?” Catherine asks. Emma isn’t exactly sure what Jem’s usual is, and she hadn’t really though of what she was going to get for her and Tessa, she just knew Tessa wouldn’t want anything with chocolate, and Jem would probably be happy with anything, you could hand Jem a pile of dirt and he’d thank you.
“Sounds good.” Emma says.
“So two girls, two boys or a boy and a girl?” Catherine asks in an excited tone, as the other lady bags up Emma’s order.
“Two girls, Jade and Charlotte.” Emma replies.
“Oh how lovely! Are you excited to be a big sister Mina?” Catherine softly asks Mina, who has looped her arms around the back of Emma’s neck now. Mina smiles broadly and nods.
“Here you are, and I put in another apple turnover for Tessa, she deserves it after giving birth to twins.” The other woman says, passing a brown paper bag to Emma, over the counter.
“Thanks, she’ll appreciate that, I’ll just have to make sure Kit doesn’t get his hands on it first.” Emma jokes, holding out a 10 pound note.
“Oh no, it’s on us, your brother and sister-in-law are so kind to us and such loyal customers.” The woman says in a kind tone.
“Really?” Emma asks in surprise.
“Absolutely, they’ve done so much for us, we’d like to do something for them.” The woman says.
“That’s so kind of you, thank you. Can you say bye-bye Mina?” Emma coos, clutching the bag of pastries in one hand and holding Mina with the other.
“Here, something for our most adorable customer.” Catherine says, handing Mina a chocolate bun. Mina’s eyes light up and she immediately starts wolfing the bun down, and Emma has to hold back a sigh knowing how much of a mess Mina is going to make with that bun and how hyper the sugar will make her.
An hour later, Emma is walking through the halls of the local hospital with Kit at her side and Mina on her hip.
“I hate the smell of hospitals.” Kit grumbles, as they walk toward the maternity ward.
“It does smell awful in here, shouldn’t a hospital smell clean?” Emma asks.
“It’s the food, whatever you do don’t eat the food here, I had my appendix out when I was 12 and was kept in for a few days, the food they gave me was the worst thing I have ever tasted and I swear it made me feel worse.” Kit says. shuddering at the memory.
“The food they serve at the Basilias isn’t great either, I was there yesterday morning actually, before I came here, visiting Helen, Aline and Delilah, they need to work on their menu.” Emma says, as they turn the corner to the room Tessa is in. When they step into the room, they see there are two giant pink balloons in the corner by the window, as well as various pastel colored baskets scattered around the room, overflowing with baby stuff.
“Did you panic and buy the entire gift shop dad?” Kit teases, setting his backpack down and walking over to embrace Jem, who laughs lightly and pulls his son into a tight embrace.
“No this is Magnus’ doing, he arrived here first thing this morning with more gifts than we know what to do with.” Jem replies, taking Mina into his arms and holding her close, pulling Kit close with the other. “Oh my babies, I missed you two so much.” He softly says, kissing Mina’s cheek and ruffling Kit’s hair.
“Jem you are so embarrassing!” Kit exclaims wriggling out of the embrace.
“That’s my job Christopher, you know that.” Jem jokingly says, embracing Emma tightly. “Thank you so much Emma, for looking after Mina and keeping an eye on Kit, it really put Tessa and I at ease, knowing that Mina and Kit were with family.” Emma smiles up at him and tells him
“It was no problem, that’s what sisters are for. Where are Tessa and the babies?” The two plastic cribs by the side of the bed are empty and Tessa is nowhere to be seen.
“The babies are having some tests done and Tessa’s in the shower, she should be done soon and the babies should be back soon.” Jem replies, holding Mina closely as Kit settles into a chair by the bed. “Did the nice ladies at the bakery give you another treat Mina mine? We’ll have to clean that chocolate off your face before you can meet your sisters.” Jem says in amused tone, lightly tapping Mina on the nose causing her to giggle loudly and grab at his hand.
“I tried to get it all off but she wouldn’t stay still long enough.” Emma says, while rooting through her bag for the pastries she got for Jem and Tessa. “I got these for you and Tess too, the ladies at the bakery gave them to me for free.” Emma holds the brown paper bag out to Jem.
“That was so thoughtful of you Em, thank you, is it thanks to Mina you got them for free? I swear every shop we go into, someone always gives us something for free because of how adorable Mina is.” Jem smiles, taking the bag from Emma.
“They said it was because you and Tessa are so good to them, they wanted to do something nice for you in return, though I don’t think Mina’s cuteness hurt the situation.” Emma tells him.
“I’ll have to make sure to go in and thank them when Tessa and the babies get home. How was Mina for you? Did she give you any trouble?” Jem asks, a tinge of worry seeping into his tone. Mina can be quiet the handful sometimes, she has a hell of a temper, like Will. Jem and Tessa like to imagine she got her temper from Will, even though he has no biological relation to her, it brings them joy and makes them feel closer to him.
“No she was good as gold, I took her on a walk this morning and she loved it, she pointed out every dog along the way, I think you’ve got an animal lover on your hands.” Emma says, gently tickling Mina’s cheek.
“Or it’s because a certain someone is always showing her what he calls ‘Dog memes’.” Jem says, making air quotes with the one hand that isn’t keep Mina secure on his hip. Kit grins proudly and says
“It keeps her happy doesn’t it? I could be worse, I could be teaching her about demon pox like Will.” Jem sighs and shakes his head.
“Just what are we going to do with your Uncle Will, Mina? Teaching my baby about STDs, I’m sorely tempted to bring him back just so I can kill him again for that.” He jokingly says. “And don’t you dare say you can help with that, Kit.” He adds. Kit grins and laughs.
“You know me so well.” He says. Just then the door to the bathroom swings open, and Tessa steps out, dressed in a blue hospital gown and a dusty pink robe, her hair tied into a bun at the back of her head.
“Mama!” Mina squeals, the minute she sees Tessa. Tessa’s eyes light up and she crosses the room and takes Mina from Jem, peppering her face in kisses.
“Oh hi baby, I missed you so much.” She softly says, holding Mina close and breathing in her scent, so glad to have her daughter back in her arms again.
“Did you miss me too?” Kit asks with a hint of anxiety in his tone, anxiety that Tessa will push him away and only want to be with Mina and the twins right now. But instead she smiles widely at him and pulls him into the embrace with one arm and plants a kiss on the top of his head.
“Of course I did my sweet boy, so much, it killed me being away from you two.” Tessa softly says, as Kit lays his head on her shoulder, enjoying the feeling of being embraced and loved and cared about.
10 minutes later the babies are back in their bassinets by Tessa’s bed, having finished all their tests and being declared perfectly healthy, which Tessa and Jem are so relieved about, seeing as the twins were a month early, they could have had all sorts of complications.
“They’re so tiny.” Kit says in a tone of awe, looking between the two bassinets that contain his youngest sisters. He thought Mina had been small, but compared to the twins, she was a giant baby.
“Well they were premature, and Mina was full term, I almost went over with her.” Tessa says from her position on the bed, with Mina in her lap, Jem at her side and Emma at Kit’s side.
“Ty and Livvy were early too, not by this much though, but they were still tiny.” Emma says in a nostalgic tone, her heart aching at the thought of Livvy.
“Do you guys have any baby pictures of Ty?” Kit asks in a curious tone, turning to look at Emma.
“I think so, I think Julian has an album that was his mom’s, why?” Emma replies. Kit grins mischievously and says
“I want to see all my boyfriend’s baby pictures, especially the embarrassing ones.”
“Speaking of babies, do you want to hold your sisters Kit?” Tessa asks, setting her apple turnover slice down on the tray in front of her. Kit’s eyes widen and he stammers
“A-are you sure? I might break them.” Tessa laughs as she reaches into the bassinet nearest her and lifts the baby out.
“You never broke Mina, you can hold them one at a time if that makes you feel better.” Kit thinks about it for a minute before nodding, plonking into a seat beside Tessa and holding his arms out.
“This is Baby A, Jade Ai Ke Carstairs.” Tessa softly says, lowering Jade into Kit’s arms.
“Emma would you like to hold Charlotte?” Jem asks, as Kit gazes at Jade in awe and fascination.
“Oh I’d love to!” Emma says in an excited tone, holding her arms out for Jem to pass little Charlotte to her. Emma cradles the baby close and smiles softly down at her. From underneath her little white cap, there are a few curls of brown hair poking out, her skin is tanned like Jem’s and she has his eye shape and bone structure, while she has Tessa’s mouth and nose.
“Wow, Min-Min, Jade looks just like you.” Kit says, smiling up at Mina.
“She certainly does, she’s like Mina 2.0 with grey eyes, Lottie has Jem’s eyes but I’m just happy that finally after 5 biological children one of my babies got my eyes.” Tessa says in a proud tone.
“You wanna say hi to your sisters Mina?” Jem gently asks, noticing Mina starting at Emma and Kit. Mina nods wordlessly. Jem scoops her off the bed and takes her over to Emma and Charlotte first.
“This is Charlotte, she looks like mama, doesn’t she?” Jem softly says, stroking the baby’s soft little cheek. Mina stares at her sister in awe, her mouth hanging half open. She nods her little head, her dark curls falling into her face. “You want to give her a kiss? Tell her you love her?” Jem encourages, while clipping Mina’s hair back from her eyes. Mina stands on her tiptoes and leans over to carefully kiss Charlotte’s head, though she more so gets her eye.
“Love oo Lottie.” Mina quietly says. Her eyes light up then and she smiles widely and points at her sister. “Daddy, Lottie, like Aunty Lottie!” She exclaims.
“That’s right my clever girl, she’s named after your Aunty Lottie like you’re named after your Uncle Will and your cousin Rosemary.” Jem tells her. He and Tessa want Mina to know about the woman she was named for, but she’s too little to understand that Rosemary is both Kit’s birth mother and related to Mina in some way, making Kit biologically her cousin, not her brother, so they simply tell her that Rosemary was her cousin.
“You wanna come over here and say hi to to Jade, Mina?” Kit asks, wanting to steer the conversation away from the topic of his birth mother. Mina nods and bounds across the room to his side. She stares at Jade the same way she did Charlotte, full of curiosity and fascination.
“Ade.” Mina says. “Lottie, Ade, sistas.” she adds, pointing from Emma and Charlotte to Kit and Jade.
“That’s right Mina mine, they’re your sisters.” Jem softly says, placing a hand on her lower back. Mina leans forward and places a sloppy kiss on Jade’s forehead (again more so getting her eye than her forehead) and says
“Love oo Ade.” While Mina, Kit and Emma fuss over the babies, Jem takes a seat next to Tessa again and slips his hand into hers.
“We have a beautiful family.” He quietly says.
“Yes we most certainly do, we’ve really been blessed.” Tessa replies, laying her head on her husband’s shoulder.
“I only wish...” Jem trails off, his throat closing up and tears welling in his eyes. He knows Tessa knows what he is trying to say, so he focuses on calming down and not crying and getting upset in front of his children and sister.
“I know, I do too, I wish all our family could be here right now. I wish Sophie was here to knit blankets for the babies, I wish Charlotte was here to fuss over them with Cecily while Henry builds them cribs and toys, Gabriel would teach them to spar and Gideon would be the most wonderful tutor, Lucie would write so many stories about her sisters and James would read to them everyday, Christopher would be fascinated by them and the fact they’re twins, Anna would buy them the most amazing little outfits, Thomas and Cordelia would insist on helping out with them while Matthew would argue with Charles over whose turn it is to hold them. I wish all our family could be here but the family that are here and that we have now are just as amazing, Magnus is the fun uncle who lets them break the rules, like he always wanted to be to Jamie and Lucie, they have a perfect family around them right now.” Jem laughs lightly and wipes at his tears as he imagines Henry presenting he and Tessa with two beautifully carved cradles that do all sorts of ridiculous things, like the self-rocking cradle he had built (and broken) for Charles before he was born.
“You’re right, of course you are my beautiful Tessa, you are always right, I’d be lost without you.” Jem quietly says. putting his arms around her shoulders.
“And I you.”
The next day the babies and Tessa are discharged from the hospital. Emma happily agrees to stay for another few weeks to help out with the twins and Mina and help with training Kit.
When Tessa, Jem and the babies arrive home from the hospital, the babies are fast asleep and Tessa and Jem can hardly keep their eyes open. So with Kit happy and safe on a date with Ty in LA and Mina happy with Emma, they put the twins in their bassinets and fall into bed, fast asleep before their heads hit the pillows.
While they sleep, Tessa and Jem are oblivious to the crowd of ghosts coming in and out of their room to see the babies. The last to come to see the twins, is of course William. He takes a minute to just stand and look at the two beautiful little girls who are a mixture of two of the people he loves most in the world.
As he stands looking at the babies, Jade blinks her eyes open and stares up at Will, her eyes wide and bright. Will smiles softly and reaches down to stroke her cheek.
“Hello little Cariad, what are you doing awake hm? You’re meant to be asleep.” He whispers. Jade blinks up at him, totally unfazed by him, just like Mina had been. “Sweet girl, go back to sleep Jade, let your mummy and daddy sleep some more, and don’t wake your sister. If you’re lonely I’ll stay with you, I always stayed with Mina, you close your eyes and go back to sleep and Uncle Will is going to stay right here.” As though soothed by these words, Jade closes her eyes and soon falls asleep in no time, clutching Will’s hand.
Tessa and Jem always speak of how they wished their family from London could be a part of their children’s lives, but they’re totally unaware of the fact that their wish has already come true. Everyone from Charlotte to Cordelia to Gideon to Jesse watches over the little family, and loves them.
It is a warm spring day in April of 1886 when Brother Zachariah arrives at The London Institute and is quickly escorted upstairs by Will, to check on Tessa who is 7 months pregnant with her and Will’s first child. Brother Zachariah has been the one to care for Tessa and the baby throughout the pregnancy, coming to check them both over at least once a week, though often times he is summoned more than once a week, as Will has developed a habit of summoning him every time Tessa so much as flinches. He had called for Jem when the baby first moved, first kicked, had the hiccups and much more, and Jem was thrilled to be able to share these very special moments with those he loves most.
“Is everything alright?” Tessa asks Jem as he feels around her swollen stomach, checking the position of the baby and his measurements.
Yes everything is perfect as usual, I have checked the baby’s position, now I am just checking his measurements. Jem explains.
“Is he in a good position?” Will asks in an anxious tone, leaning forward in his chair at the side of Tessa’s bed.
There is no bad position for him to be in right now William, when it comes closer to Tessa’s due date I will be keeping a much closer eye on his position. Jem tells his friend.
“He’s kicking a lot, is he meant to kick so much? He’s keeping Tessa up at night.” Will asks, his tone full of worry and concern. Tessa laughs lightly and squeezes her husband’s hand.
“Will don’t bother Jem with your silly questions, this little one is just mischievous like his papa.” She says in a light tone.
“They are not silly questions, he is preventing you from getting a proper rest, our son is quiet inconsiderate, he’s already being influenced by Gabriel!”Will dramatically exclaims.
It is alright William, I understand your concern but rest assured that your son’s kicks are nothing to worry about, if he is keeping you awake Tessa perhaps try talking to him or have William talk to him, Charlotte tells me that calmed her boys down when she was pregnant. Jem says, reminding himself to write up the notes from the recent delivery of Charlotte and Henry’s second son, Matthew, which he witnessed and assisted with.
“How are Charlotte and little Matthew? We have not got a chance to visit them yet, Cecily, Gabriel and Anna went to see them the other day, apparently little Matthew looks nothing like Henry or Charlotte.” Tessa curiously asks, hoping that she and Will manage a trip to Idris to visit the Fairchild’s before the baby is born.
Charlotte and Matthew are doing very well, Charlotte is recovering well and little Matthew is perfectly healthy, Charles is in love with his brother and Henry is extremely proud and happy. And yes, Matthew is the polar opposite of his parents, blonde hair and green eyes, apparently he looks like Henry’s side of the family. Jem tells them, finishing his physical examination.
“What are you doing now?” Will suddenly asks, as Jem turns to pick something up from a tray behind him.
I am going to test Tessa’s blood, make sure the baby’s Nephilim blood is not affecting her in a bad way, no need to worry William, I have done this test every single month since the first month and there has never been any problem, I am sure it will be the same now. Jem assures his friend, who he knows is stressing and fretting over everything.
“I am going to have to start working on his nursery soon, but we simply cannot decide which room should be his.” Will says, sitting back in his chair, lacing his fingers with Tessa’s.
“Cecily and I want the babies to share a nursery, but Will and Gabriel want the babies close to them and our room and Cecily and Gabriel’s room are quiet far from each other.” Tessa explains, running a hand down the side of her stomach. Cecily is 5 months pregnant and she and Tessa are very hopeful that since their babies will be so close in age, they will be close friends as they grow up, and Anna will love her cousin as much as she loves her brother.
May I make a suggestion? Jem asks, setting the vial of blood down and turning to Tessa and Will.
“Of course.” Tessa says, linking her other hand with Jem’s and gently squeezing it.
Give the baby my room, do not keep it an empty shrine to me, fill it with new memories and love, with your son, I would love nothing more. Jem suggests, loving the idea of his old room being filled with a new life, a new life that will bring so much love and hope to Will and Tessa.
“Oh of course, that is a lovely idea.” Tessa softly says. Will nods in agreement and says
“I agree, we will tell our son stories of his beloved Uncle Jem and tell him how his Uncle Jem wanted him to have his room because he loves him so much.”
Have you decided on a name? Jem curiously asks, knowing that he really shouldn’t allow himself to become so involved and so attached.
Tessa and Will share a grin and Tessa says
“We have but it’s a secret, we are not telling anyone until he is born.” She and Will had agreed on a name for the baby as soon as they found out they are expecting and that they are expecting a boy, but they want to surprise everyone with his name, when he arrives.
Not even me? Jem teases, pulling a chair up to the other side of Tessa’s bed and sitting down.
“Well we would but The Silent Brothers are just such terrible gossips, it would spread like wild fire, I hear Brother Enoch is terrible with secrets.” Will jokingly says, smiling at his friend.
“Oh, this little one has the hiccups again, he must ingest his food as quickly as you William.” Tessa lightly says, placing a hand over her stomach where she can feel a rhythmic twitching.
“Again? Is it normal for it to happen so much?” Will asks in a concerned tone.
I am certain it is but perhaps I should stay for a while and monitor him. Jem says, coming up with an excuse to stay longer and spend more time with Will and Tessa.
“Are you sure Brother Enoch would not allow you to stay here until the baby is born? This baby is the first of his kind and Tessa is the first Warlock to be able to have a child, surely it is not too much to have constant care?” Will asks in a hopeful tone. He had requested this at almost every stage of Tessa’s pregnancy but every time Brother Enoch told him he was being ridiculous, weekly check ups were plenty enough to keep a good eye on Tessa and the baby.
Contrary to your belief William, Tessa is not my only patient. Jem says, a hint of amusement creeping into his tone.
“Well of course not, you also attend to Cecily, which is another reason as to why you should stay with us until our baby is born, you would be able to keep a closer eye on Cecily too, after how sick she was when she was pregnant with Anna, she should have more frequent care too.” Will argues, feeling as though he may go mad with worry, between worrying about Tessa and their son, and fretting about Cecily and her baby, he is all worried out.
“Oh he’s kicking, Jem you must feel!” Tessa suddenly exclaims in a tone of excitement, placing Jem’s hand over her stomach where she can feel the nudge of her baby’s foot.
“Strong little Shadowhunter already our boy is.” Will proudly says, placing his hand next to Jem’s on Tessa’s stomach.
So he is, he will be a wonderful young man someday.
Downstairs, Cecily and Gabriel have just finished up lunch and are sitting in the drawing room with Anna toddling about, exploring her surroundings, while they discuss baby names for their son.
“Cecily do you suppose everything is alright with Tessa and the baby? Brother Zachariah has been with her an awfully long time, his visits with you never last anywhere near this long.” Gabriel asks his wife in a concerned tone, glancing up at the ceiling since the infirmary is right over the drawing room.
“I’m surprised you haven’t noticed before now, I am sure everything is fine with Tessa and the baby, she, Will and Jem are soaking up their time together and using this excuse to be able to spend longer periods of time together.” Cecily calmly explains to her husband, her heart breaking for her brother and how desperately he misses Jem.
“Those three have an odd relationship, I can’t imagine wanting to spend so much time with a Silent Brother.” Gabriel says.
“He’s not just a Silent Brother to them Gabe, he’s their Jem, Will’s parabatia and Tessa’s fiance, if Gideon had become a Silent Brother would you not do everything you could to see him as often as possible?” Cecily gently asks, trying to get Gabriel to understand Tessa, Will and Jem’s situation.
“Hmm that I am not sure of, I would not miss him bossing me around.” Gabriel lightly says, scooping Anna up and kissing her cheek. “What do you think Anna? Are you going to boss your brother around like your Uncle Gideon bosses me around?” Anna smiles brightly and nods.
“Uh hu, I boss of him, like mama the boss of Uncle Will!” Anna brightly exclaims, snuggling into her father and resting her head on his shoulder. Gabriel and Cecily laugh and Gabriel presses a kiss to his daughter’s temple.
“And what about Aunt Tessa and Uncle Will’s baby, are you going to boss him around?” Cecily teases, brushing Anna’s dark hair back from her bright green eyes. Anna thinks about it for a moment before she says
“Uh-hu, I in charge!” Cecily and Gabriel share a grin and Gabriel lightly says
“Well your brother and your cousin have no idea what they are in for.”
That evening, not long after Jem leaves, Will and Tessa make their way to his old room for the first time in quiet a few years, ready to clear it out and turn it into a nursery for their baby.
As Will transports Jem’s stuff from his room to the storage space, Tessa sits in a chair by the window, where Jem use to play his violin, where he had been when they had first met, holding back tears. Jem’s violin is no longer here, it is stored in the music room instead.
“I think we should keep something of Jem’s in here, just one thing, I feel like it will connect him and the baby.” Tessa quietly suggests to Will, tracing patterns on her swollen stomach and looking around at the few things of Jem’s that are left in the room.
“I agree, how about we keep his cane in here? It could be our boy’s weapon of choice!” Will exclaims, excitement welling up in him at the thought of his son and Jem sharing a weapon of choice.
Tessa smiles and nods
“He cannot use it until he is older though, not until he has been trained in blades and swords.” Tessa firmly says, knowing her husband will want to train their son to use the cane from the moment he can hold something in his hand. Will pouts but then dramatically bows to his wife and kisses her hand.
“As you wish my lady.” he solemnly says, as though Tessa has just asked him to leave her.
“If this little one is anywhere near as dramatic as you I may go mad.”Tessa teases, as Will kneels beside her and starts to trace soft patterns on her belly, a habit which he has developed over the last few months. He leans in close to the bump and softly says
“Jamie,it’s daddy, I love you baby boy, so much.” The minute he hears his father’s voice, the baby starts kicking up a fuss, flipping, rolling, kicking and everything in between.
“I cannot wait to tell Jem his name, I hope he won’t mind.” Tessa says, doubt creeping into her voice.
“Of course he will not mind, he will be honored and delighted. What should his middle name be? We should settle on that soon or else he will not have one.” Will assures his wife.
“Perhaps Edmund, after your father?” Tessa suggests.
“I do love that idea but Cecily has already claimed that as a middle name for her son, she has claimed it since she was pregnant with Anna.” Will says, folding his arms over one of the arms of Tessa’s chair and resting his chin there.
“How about William then? I love the idea of naming my son after the two people I love most in the world, and two of the three people who love him the most.” Tessa softly suggests, knowing that Jem already loves this baby just as much as she and Will do and will be a very big part of his life. Will smiles softly and nods.
“Yes, yes I like it. James William Herondale, a name fit for a king.”
*2 Months later*
It is a calm June evening in London when Tessa feels her first contraction. She is sitting in the library with Will, who is holding a book with one hand and has the other resting on Tessa’s bump. Tessa’s head is resting on her husband’s shoulder, his soothing voice reading A Tale Of Two Cities, relaxing her, until she feels an intense pain grip her stomach, taking her breath away with it’s intensity. Tessa gasps and clutches at her stomach, unable to speak or move.
“Tess?” Will asks in an alarmed tone, setting the book down and sitting up straight. “I-is it time?” He adds. Tessa lets out a long breath as the pain eases and slackens her grip on her stomach.
“I-I think so.” Tessa stammers, bracing herself for the next pain.
Will quickly helps his wife upstairs to the infirmary and asks Cecily to sit with her, while he races to summon Jem, and to ask Charlotte and Sophie to come as soon as they can to support and help Tessa.
Half an hour later Tessa is sitting on the edge of one of the infirmary beds, clutching her back and trying to breathe through the pain. Sophie and Charlotte immediately came to The Institute when they heard Tessa was in labor, and she is extremely grateful for theirs and Cecily’s support.
“Tessa, the midwife is here if you would like her to check on how things are progressing.” Charlotte softly says. Tessa shakes her head and says
“N-no... .Jem, I want Jem to deliver him, no one else.” It is not usual for Silent Brothers to deliver babies, but sometimes they do, usually in cases of high risk pregnancies and complicated births, but there is nothing to say a Silent Brother cannot deliver a baby that has not been a complicated pregnancy and is not a complicated birth. “Where’s Jem?!” Tessa asks in a tone of desperation as another horrendous pain hits her.
I am here. She hears Jem’s familiar voice, echoing softly in her head. Seconds later he is at her side, crouching in front of her. She grabs his hand in hers, gritting her teeth through the pain.
“Oh Jesus, oh God!” Tessa screams as the pain intensifies. Jem pushes his hood back and places a hand on Tessa’s shoulder.
Keep breathing Tessa, when this contraction has passed I can give you something to ease the pain. He tells her.
Tessa clutches Jem’s shoulders tightly, looking him straight in the face.
“I want you to deliver him, no one else just you, I only trust you.” Jem squeezes her hand lightly.
Then I shall deliver him.
Tessa’s labor continues for hours and hours. While she labors in The Infirmary, Will, Gideon, Henry and Gabriel wait outside, Will an anxious mess as usual.
6 hours after going into labor, Tessa feels the familiar urge to push, but feels no desire to move from her position, sitting on the edge of the bed, to lying flat on her back on the bed, as many women do.
“Jem I don’t want to lie down, I want to stay sitting I feel better this way, please let me stay sitting.” Tessa hurriedly says, wincing as another pain tears through her.
I will never make you do anything you do not want to Tessa, you are the one giving birth to this baby and therefore you are in control, if you want to sit then you can sit. Jem tells her, causing relief to wash over her like a wave.
As Tessa starts to push, Charlotte, Sophie and Cecily take a few steps back from her, sensing that she has the one person she needs more than anything with her, she has Jem.
Jem kneels by Tessa’s feet, blocking everything from view from everyone but him. As she pushes, Tessa grasps both Jem’s shoulders, drawing strength and energy from him being with her.
I can see his head Tessa, he will be here before you know it, push again. Jem encourages her. Tessa takes a shaky breath, grips Jem’s shoulders and pushes again, as hard as she can. A few minutes later she feels a weight lift from her followed very closely by the cry of a baby. Tessa’s breath hitches in her throat when Jem carefully lays her baby on a clean white towel at her feet and begins to clean him down.
“Oh is he okay?” Tessa asks in a breathy tone, trying desperately to catch her breath.
He is absolutely perfect, congratulations. Jem tells her, wrapping the baby up in the towel and passing him up to Tessa, just as Will barges in, having heard the baby cry and being unable to wait a second more to meet his son and see that Tessa is alright.
“William, Will look at him.” Tessa says in a teary tone, looking up from her son to her husband, tears of joy welling in her eyes. Their little boy is so utterly beautiful and perfect, already his father’s double.
“Oh my god, our miracle.” Will softly says in a tone of awe, sitting next to Tessa and running a hand over the baby’s thick mop of black hair.
“Are you going to tell us his name now?” Cecily eagerly asks. She hated that Will and Tessa had kept the baby’s name a secret, she hated not knowing things like that, Gabriel had not wanted to find out the sex of the baby this time or when she was pregnant with Anna, but Cecily was far too curious to wait 9 months to know and insisted on finding out.
“Not yet, we want to keep it to ourselves another while.” Tessa quietly says, gazing down at her baby.
“Would you like a hint Cecily?” Will asks, smiling up at his sister, knowing how much this must be killing her.
“Yes!” Cecily exclaims.
“It starts with a J.” Will tells her.
“Jesse after Jessamine?” Cecily asks. Will smiles and shakes his head
“No that name is taken anyway is it not? Your sister-in-law named her baby Jesse didn’t she?” Tessa asks, adjusting the baby in her arms.
“Who Tatianna? I have no idea what she named her son, she does not speak to Gabriel or Gideon, just as well too, I do not want someone like her around my children.” Cecily firmly says, knowing he spoiled and awful Tatianna is, from all of Gabriel’s stories, he adores his sister of course, but he knows she is not the best person.
“Listen to your Aunty Cecily my boy, Lightworms are never good news.” Will quietly says to the baby. Cecily smiles and rolls her eyes at her brother’s comment.
“I best go check on Matthew and Charles, see how Henry is doing being on his own with them both for the first time, if you need any help with the little one at all, Henry, the boys and I will be staying here for a few more nights.” Charlotte says, once she and Sophie have helped the midwife clean up the bloody towels and sheets.
“Yes I better go check on Thomas, Brother Zachariah could you please check him over? If you do not mind, I worry that all the travelling we have done today will affect his health, and he is still so small for his age and is not meeting his milestones on time.” Sophie asks in a tone full of concern for her ill child, who was born 2 months premature last year.
Of course Sophie. Brother Zachariah says, drawing his hood up and walking from the room behind Sophie, unable to think of anything else to say to Tessa and Will, he is of course thrilled for them but it also hurts him greatly that he will not get to be as involved in their child’s life as he should be.
A few days later, Tessa and Will travel to The Silent City with their baby to have the runes of protection placed upon him, and Will had demanded that Brother Zachariah be the one to place the runes on him alongside an Iron Sister. Right now Tessa and Jem are standing in a small stone room in The Silent City, with only a stone slab in the center, waiting on Jem and The Iron Sister to arrive.
“Your Uncle Jem is coming to see you Jamie, and we are going to tell him your name, that we are naming you after him, I hope he likes your name, do you like your name?” Will coos to his son, who is lying wide awake in Will’s arms, looking all around him. Jamie coos and reaches out to grab his father’s hand, snuggling further into him, as if to say ‘Yes I like my name!’
Just then the doors to the room open and Jem and an Iron Sister walk in.
“Are you ready to begin?” The Iron sister calmly asks.
“Tess and I are, what about you my boy, are you ready to become a big strong Shadowhunter like your daddy?” Will coos to the baby, who smiles up at him in delight and reaches up to pat his face.
What will you name your child? Brother Zachariah formally asks, as part of the ceremony.
“James, his name is James William Herondale.” Will proudly announces, smiling proudly down at his son while Tessa reaches over to stroke Jamie’s dark hair and soft little cheek.
When Will looks up to see Jem’s reaction, Jem has turned away and covered his face with his hands, so beyond conflicted and struggling to figure out how to feel about the baby’s name. He is honored that Tessa and Will have chosen to name their son after him but he also wishes for the child to have his own name, one that is not attached to so much heartache, but he knows better than to ask them to change the child’s name, Tessa and Will are two extremely stubborn people and once they have made up their minds, nothing on earth can make them change their minds.
The runes of protection and all the travelling leave little Jamie absolutely exhausted by the time evening comes, he easily fell asleep in his mother’s arms in the carriage ride home and slept for hours afterward, only waking up for an hour to nurse and then immediately falling back asleep. Tessa and Will know their is no point in trying to keep him awake until his usual bedtime, all structure and routine has gone out the window today. So once Tessa has finished winding James, she and Will take him to his nursery, Jem’s old room transformed for the baby, as he had requested.
“This was your Uncle Jem’s room Jamie, he wants you to have it because he loves you so much, just as much as mama and I do, he is the bravest man I have ever met and I have no doubt you will grow up to be just as amazing as him.” Will softly tells his son, as he settles into the rocking chair by the window with him.
“Tell him a story about Jem, your favorite story about him.” Tessa quietly says, sitting on the end of Jem’s old bed, that will become Jamie’s when he no longer needs his crib.
Will smiles at his wife and nods, before looking down at his son and quietly starting to tell him the story of how Jem asked him to be his parabatia. This is first of many nights that little James will fall asleep to the sounds of his mother or father telling him stories about his amazing, beloved Uncle Jem.
