Formulating my thoughts better.
Van Gogh cut off his ear (or part of it) on December 23rd, 1888. In the Dear Van Gogh trailer, there is a shot with five of his paintings, using the Starry Night painting as a background. Three of the paintings I know for certain were painted after he cut his ear. The Starry Night was painted while he was in a mental hospital and depicts the view from his room there. Almond Blossoms was also made in that same hospital. So why does the model shown in the trailer have both ears. Especially since the one on the right of the first image turns into crows, a reference to Wheatfield with Crows, which again was painted after he cut his ear.
Now I acknowledge Van Gogh is more than "the guy who cut his ear off". What I'm trying to say with this is I don't like how this feels like erasure of his struggles with mental health. Van Gogh was and is a human and his life deserves to be treated with respect, not picked and chosen from for profit while ignoring his struggles. That is disrespectful.
