Although Loki is still the king of my heart, this year I’ll go with the gloomy, tormented Thomas Sharpe.

His melancholic beauty grips my heart, and I always loved gothic stories so much!

Hiddles Birthday Week - Day 4

Theme: Favorite Role

I haven't seen nearly as many of his films as I would like or had the pleasure to see him on stage so I will have to go with the role that made me go "Oh hello Mr. Hiddleston!" - Sir Thomas Sharpe in "Crimson Peak". I adored him as Loki but I didn't quite get the fangirl over him at the time. Then I saw the previews for "Crimson Peak". I got it then.

Day Four:  Wednesday (Feb 6th) - Favourite Role/Movie

Okay, I am not picking one for this day.  It would be like picking a favourite child.  Just can’t be done.  So I am picking two.  

First up is what I think is my favourite performance of Tom as Hank Williams in I Saw the Light.  Very much an underrated film but Tom was simply wonderful in it.  It is very much a stretch for the Brit to do a Southern accent but he pulls it off.  And he looks like Hank.  Hank Williams was a tortured soul and that came through in his music and his short life.  Tom portrays that hearbreak and hurt perfectly.

Second one is my favorite Tom movie which is (after serious debate) Crimson Peak.  Although I love Loki, I know that 1) it will be picked a lot and 2) I really really love this movie.  The costumes are divine and that sex scene, so steamy.  I will watch this movie over and over again.  And Guillermo Del Toro is a genius.  And to think this movie was not going to star Tom until Benedict Cumberbatch had to drop out. Benny’s loss is our gain! Gives us more Thomas Sharpe!

Honorable Mention:  Hollow Crown.  The slap of the face by Jeremy Irons and well Shakespeare.  Yes please.

Favourite Role

Mean ask because he is so good in all roles Coriolanus is a hot one for the top and Henry V as well but for shear “OH god someone give him a hug one moment and then the next give him a clip around the ear.

HiddlesBirthdayWeek day 4: Favourite Role/Movie

Having to choose between his roles is torture. 

I could say the dark, gloomy Thomas Sharpe, the melancholic, immortal Adam, or the “excellent specimen” Robert Laing, not to mention his extraordinary performances in shakespearean plays. 

But the truth is that, maybe like the majority of us, the first time Tom’s tremendous skills hit me like a truck was in the guise of a young man who learns the truth about his parentage, then descends into an abyss, experiencing fear, rejection, rage, thirst for revenge, loss, before, bit by bit, reconciling with his past. 

From here on out, who knows? Time will tell.

Hiddles Birthday Week - Day 4

Day Four: Wednesday (Feb 6th) - Favourite Role/Movie

*sigh* It doesn’t get any easier. *desperately thinks of ways to narrow down the choice/actually make a decision*

I chose The Night Manager last year, and I’m going with the same this year. But this time, I’ll list 10 reasons why:

1) Jonathan Pine. ‘nuff said.

2) Landed him a well-deserved Golden Globe win. Go, Tom, whoo!

3) He played three different characters (or well, four) and somehow managed to make each one slightly different. By subtly altering his voice, his mannerisms, his looks. I bet Tom would make a great real-life spy.

4) THIS

5) The gorgeous settings and the amazing rest of the cast make it immensely watchable even without Tom’s stellar performance.

6) This scene, in one take without rehearsals. Effing kill me now.

7) Remember Susanne Bier’s comment about how Tom can do so much with his face? Yeah, that’s a good reason right there.

8) Tom speaking foreign languages. I just can’t help myself, it’s the linguist in me. That tiny bit of German in Switzerland will haunt me forever. The bit of Spanish too, and the Arabic.

9) His alias Jack Linden. Lethal, just lethal. Right? @bemynightmanager
