I am officially declaring all male critics of Captain Marvel to be irrelevant after watching the CinemaSins, Th3Birdman, and CinemaWins videos on it.
(Obvious spoilers for Captain Marvel)
First, let’s get this out of the way: she isn’t overpowered in the movies. That’s just how she is. (source: https://www.marvel.com/articles/comics/why-captain-marvel-is-the-most-powerful-hero-in-the-marvel-universe-an-infographic) Get over it.
Second, the montage of falling down scenes. CinemaSins and Th3Birdman both said it was heavy handed, taking too long to show a repetitive list of times Carol was told she wasn’t good enough. Clearly because both channels are run by men. Women being told they aren’t going to succeed, that they are destined to fail, that they are just going to be inferior because they are women, happens all. The. Time. Showing it across different times in her life, in different capacities, by peers and authority figures alike, was accurate. And it sets up the beautiful payoff at the end. She always gets back up. Damn, what a moment. What an inspirational moment. A moment to cheer for. Not only because she’s the protagonist and we’re rooting for her, but because we’ve been there and we either couldn’t or we did too, and we know how it must feel.
Third, the motorcycle scene. Th3Birdman especially pissed me off here, saying her reaction was too much and unwarranted. Even if you want to put aside Carol having a history with men like this, because her memories are still hazy right now, fine. It is still terrifying for a woman to be confronted by a man who is clearly confident in his authority. Her having the knowledge that she is, in fact, much more powerful than him, allowed her the confidence to prove it, and move on. Remember, she was brainwashed by a warrior species. We don’t tend to see them dilly-dally on others who aren’t worth the extra time trying to reason and be nice to. Hell, we don’t even see that with the other human heroes in the universe. Which is also why she isn’t supposed to be criminalized here. The parallels of this scene to other characters in the MCU (Cap, Nat, Bucky, etc) and other celebrated male hero movies (it’s an almost direct copy from Terminator 2) are numerous, so look those up for further reason why people need to shut up.
Lastly, Brie’s performance. I’ll direct you to her insta stories where she snapped (no pun intended) after people told her to emote more, specifically smile, and she posted those posters of other MCU movies with photoshopped smiles. Outside of the hideous double standard, Carol is a soldier, a warrior, brainwashed (looking for backup here Bucky stans), and is literally battling shapeshifting aliens on an alien planet. Explain to me why she would be an open book of emotions? The moments she is truly happy, smiling, smirking, cheering, laughing, and scared are moments where it makes sense. When she’s with people she trusts, or after she starts exploring her true powers and fights off her ex-friends who deceived her this whole time. I’d be a sarcastic fucker too if I could beat up the liars in my life, and yeah, I’d enjoy every second. Hence, the satisfaction with Yon-Rogg getting fucking blasted while trying to make her prove she’s mastered the ability to fight him without getting emotional and using her powers. She doesn’t have anything to prove to him, because he’s just trying to manipulate her again, and there is no need to win on his terms, only her own. Perfect expectation subversion, perfect character realization that there isn’t a need for growth here. She knows how to beat him. Why try to do it any other way? For his benefit? Her enemy’s????
And, Th3Birdman can kiss my ass for calling Brie’s flat. Commenting on an actress’ appearance in general, but her ass specifically, is disgusting. This isn’t supposed to be porn for you. If she isn’t your type, fine, don’t fucking advertise it and don’t make it sound like her fucking fault for not fitting your fucking standards. And it definitely should not be in your criticism of the movie. It has nothing to do with it at all. Grow the fuck up.
There is plenty more but if I try to focus on it enough to type it out, I’ll scream. Feel free to add.
