Rangers assistant GM Thad Levine was on 105.3 the Fan and had some interesting things to say about the Rios trade. He did confirm that the player to be named later would have to clear waivers in order to complete the deal this season. If the player to be named later is claimed by the White Sox, then the deal could also be completed this season. But, if another team claims the player to be named later, the Rangers would pull him back off waivers and then complete the trade in the offseason. Reports are that the player to be named later is Leury Garcia, but Thad Levine could not actually confirm that just yet. Levine also confirmed that the Rangers did have discussions about Rios before the regular trade deadline, but they stalled because the White Sox basically had no one ready to take over for Rios in RF. That changed once the White Sox were able to trade Jake Peavy to the Red Sox in a three team deal that eventually landed them Avisail Garcia from Detroit. Garcia is a very talented young OF and the White Sox were now eager to dump Rios and hand the reigns over to him. Pretty interesting stuff.

Thad Levine is Staying?

YES!!! Appearantly, he has decided to take himself out of the running for the Astros GM job...BEFORE he was even interviewed. If this sounds familiar, it's because Ranger pitching coach Mike Maddux did the same thing to the Boston Red Sox. It appears people actually like being apart of a winning organization... Imagine that. Keeping Thad Levine is a HUGE win for the Rangers. He's been an intragal part of the franchise's recent success. With Scott Servais moving on to the Angels and the Rangers still looking for his replacement, it appears that Thad may get a chance to expand his role with the team by overseeing the farm system. Being a long-time Ranger fan, it's refreshing to have people actually wanting to be part of this organization. Hopefully that will translate over to the free agent market as well.

Rangers Bringing in Greg Maddux?

The Chicago Tribune is reporting that Greg Maddux is leaving the Cubs after two years as the special assistant to the General Manager and could be headed to Texas in a similar role. Rumors are swirling that the Rangers assistant GM, Thad Levine, is being wooed by the Houston Astros, so Maddux could move right in and help fill that void. Thad Levine has been a crucial part of the Rangers ability to rebuild the franchise and has helped Jon Daniels in all areas of baseball operations for the past 6 years. He would be a big loss, but filling that role with Greg Maddux could be an interesting move.
