The Affectionate Punch, The Associates (1980)
The Associates were probably the best act of Scottish post-punk (sorry Orange Juice, Josef K, others). The Affectionate Punch, their debut, however, was rather unassuming. It channelled a lot of Bowie’s Low – not only was their moody atmospheric richness punctuated by funk bass but Billy Mackenzie’s voice verged perilously close to Bowie imitation.
The rest is very ‘80s – as so much music in the ‘80s was – a bit chintzy, quite dramatic. But it’s the atmosphere and performances that really shine. The Associates managed a sort of eerie dancefloor vibe, lyrically anxious and both Mackenzie and Alan Rankine were clearly decent writers of hooks and music more generally. Decent, not excellent – but indicative of later brilliance.
Pick: ‘Amused As Always’
