Went to a meet-and-greet with Daniel Handler/Lemony Snicket at Doylestown Bookshop last friday! This is the second time I have met him, the first time I didn't expect to see him.* I don't like my photo taken but I love the funny photos he takes with everyone, so as a kind of last minute idea I asked if he would pose "with" my Snicket Pup (which I had shown him last time we met, lol) and I was prepared for him to say absolutely not, but...not only did he do it, he nailed it. I just told him to do whatever he wanted and I love how it came out! He said he always wanted to know what it would be like to be Bob Hoskins in Who Framed Roger Rabbit so I hope I got the right vibe. *It was at a play he was workshopping and everyone told me he'd probably be there but I was a fool and thought of course he wouldn't be, he'd be watching it remotely at MOST, why would be be in New Jersey?? Yeah so of course I was wrong about that. I'm an idiot.

He also signed some books for me and I gave him a gift (a hand typed/bound/illustrated book, my translations of a small collection of 100 year old works by Kenji Miyazawa). It was such an amazing experience, once again! If you ever get a chance to meet this wonderful man, do!

Also read his new memoir, And Then? And Then? What Else? It's really, really good! (I ended up with four copies by accident but I don't regret it because they each had something special attached, i.e. the first one came two weeks early for no reason, which allowed me to read it at my own pace before meeting with him, which made me very happy! Forgot to ask my questions specific to that book, though, damn it!)

something ive been thinking about wrt the basic eight is that. so natasha’s not real, but what were the dialogues, the scenes with her, actually like in reality? were they purely imaginary on flannery’s part, or if her words were actually flannery’s words? i guess it’s a mix of both. i mean we know some actions are most definitely actually flannery’s actions (the murder, for one example) and we’ve also seen dialogues that were like, natasha said something, then flannery echoed that, and someone else comments “you just said that”. so definitely some words are flannery’s own. i guess theres also some conversations that went slightly differently in actuality, and the natasha lines were not really what flan said but what she imagined and sort of fitted into the actual conversation, twisting things here and there to fit that in. but maybe there are lines that might have been said by someone else, too? i’m a little uncertain on this part. would she have changed someone else (not herself’s) lines to natasha’s, in her own mind? or would it only be hers or imagined?

theres this part in the book where there’s a day when flan keeps mistaking someone else for adam before realizing that it’s someone else. if some of natasha’s words were indeed said by someone else, if some of natasha’s actions were indeed done by someone else - then flan mistakes it for “natasha” - it’s not dissimilar to how she mistook others for adam. and that’s an interesting parallel. adam who flan considered herself in love with. adam who she kept mistaking other people as him on that day. but with natasha it wasn’t a single day. it’s so, so, so much longer than that

We need to make The Basic Eight part of coquette literature alongside things like The Virgin Suicides and My Year Of Rest And Relaxation. It’s got everything: a morally grey, mentally unstable and likably unlikeable female protagonist, great outfit descriptions, murder, and surprisingly deep and complex musings on feminism and the nature of girlhood. It’s perfect .
