The Beijinger
"I’m not afraid to reinvent, I’m only afraid of losing again," Bai Yu sings, and you don’t doubt him for a second.
Get to know Life Awaits 乐队 in this feature interview by Will Griffith for The Beijinger.
And if you missed it, we just posted 2 songs from the band, including the title track from their most recent album.
Had the pleasure of working with a good friend on this spread for The Beijinger's dining feature on the city's best dessert. You can check out the rest of the spread/magazine here.
中国唯一的的跳传统方块舞的乐队出名了。我们在北京人杂志的封面!我要寄五本给我的妈妈Hey, China’s only square dance band is on the cover of the popular listings magazine the Beijinger this month! I’m going to send five copies to my mother.
Umm... Instead of Working a Crappy Internship and Paying $1500 for Rent
... why don't you just move somewhere more awesome?
How about living amongst glittering skyscrapers and enjoying some of the hottest nightlife in the world? All while working a no pressure, low hours job.
That's teaching English in Shanghai and Beijing for you. Heck, last time we were in that area, we met guys who worked a few hours a week teaching "english conversation" which is basically hanging out with someone a talking in English for an hour or so. And these were total hobos, not cream of the crop Harvard grads.... yet they lived like kings.
You don't need a whole lot to lead a better life than you're living in NYC or LA.
But it's not just teaching. Foreign companies - especially those in Asia - are always looking for smart guys to form a link with Western culture. So if you've already invested a lot for that fancy degree, you're in an even better spot.
Check out websites like ChinaJob or The Beijinger for opportunities in China. But you can always look at Craigs too... or take a shot in the dark and email businesses in foreign countries.
Who knows, maybe that surf startup in Costa Rica needs a guy. It never hurts to ask, and just one "yes" could change your life forever. No more wall to wall carpeting in a cheap condo with low ceilings right of the highway. Fuck that.
There's not even a microscopic chance for the dodo. It's fat, can't fly or run, and supposedly just wanted to make friends with the hunters who led to their extinction. That being said, I will always route for the underdog, even if there's not a chance, always.
Meric Long (Guitarist, The Dodos).
In 2012, The Dodos scored an honorable mention in Baeble Blog's list of Top 5 Bird Bands. The five favorites were Niki & the Dove, Andrew Bird, Phoenix, Department of Eagles and Yellow Ostrich. Recently, the beijinger magazine interviewed Meric Long of The Dodos and asked who would win in a fight, a dodo or a phoenix. His answer is above.
So, immortality FTW, we guess.
