More crime fiction! Although most of the books in my pile of reading seem to have murder or some kind of death/devastation in there somewhere (hi Jo Nesbo books I'll get round to you some day I promise).
In this case a body is found out in one of the ice fishing domes by someone out their fishing who was seeking shelter. The body of a woman definitely not dressed for this and was later found to be tortured and stabbed it quickly identified and it's only really then the police's problems start as Inna Wattrang is one of three key figures in a celebrated high power mining company.
What I did like about it was that it showed wasn't all from one person's perspective instead of being written and filtered through the main character, prosecutor Rebacka Martinsson, it also gave the reader the points of view of one of the detectives Anna-Maria Mella as well as showing a lot of the minor characters and their histories tracing back to how they came here and eventually showing the reasons for their roles in crime the police are investigating such as the history between the founder of the mining company Mauri Kallis and the two Wattrang siblings, and even the background of Kallis's family in detail.
Another interesting thing was that unlike the more typical stories this was not all wrapped up nicely with the murderer arrested and order calmly restored to the area. Although it became apparent that Inna Wattrang was killed by a professional even though it went wrong the hitman was left with just an alert out after him and the person who ordered it escaped with their life because their family helped save them.
However this book did in a way bring some conclusion to its characters as Martinsson returned to work after a horrific event and she's trying to return to normal and by the end of this she seems to have succeeded and as this is a series centred round her maybe that's what's most important.
Larsson doesn't offer a happily resolution but maybe the story is better for it. Her characters are flawed, some of them increasingly desperate and no one is perfect but at the end of the day the people working in the justice system did they're best and found out all the who's and why's to Inna's murder but the ending, the lack of the comforting resolution where the bad people are locked away or dead is quite jarring.
