Some people’s entire worldview, attitude towards humanity, and / or intelligence can be inferred from the way they put their cart in the middle of the aisle and walk away. Their entire character can be inferred from their attitude when you attempt to get around it - slight irritation, or a fast apology. I would like my obituary to mention I had good cart / aisle situational awareness.

I think I’ll be fine; what are the alternatives? To decide not to be fine? You meet the new thing and you surpass it, endure it, or of course you suppress and ignore until the entire edifice collapses with a thunderous roar. Actually, I like that option. Worked so far. Usually does until, you know, thunderous roar.

We went [with an] artificial / pre-wired [Christmas tree] at some point, and I hated that tree as the years went on. The lights were short strands joined into one rod of conjoined plugs ten inches long, which seemed ridiculous - but hey, UL approved. The last two years I would rage, rage against the dying of the strands of lights that had shorted or snapped...

Rain and sleet and snow. November came in like a lout sent by the boss to go to a shop that's balking at paying protection. Knock over a few things. Menace a customer or two. Nothing big. Just let him know the score.

James is thinking, among other things, to his daughter Natalie (formerly “the Gnat”) go off to college in the not-too-distant future. Looking back: danger of toxic nostalgia. Looking forward: danger of major anxiety. Comparing today to Back Then or to Some Day is inevitable. Don’t let it hurt you too much.
Beforehand we met the Mayor, talked to some Vets, chatted with the support staff - everyone cheerful and so gosh-darned nice, which would be surprising if you weren't from these parts. Even if you are it's surprising to be reminded how pleasant it is to live in a place that isn't characterized by proud rudeness.
