Some sweet parallels that killed me
In the Brick, I can’t help but see parallels between Eponine’s and Grantaire’s death scenes. I guess it’s already been pointed out and if so, im sorry for being redundant.
So, when Eponine dies, Marius is holding her and she admits, "And by the way, Monsieur Marius, I believe that I was a little bit in love with you."
And then, Hugo writes:
She tried to smile once more and expired.
She tells Marius she loves him and then tries to smile. She may have died trying, or before she managed to smile, or afterwards. It’s unclear.
When Grantaire dies, he is with Enjolras, though he is not holding him but his hand. The legendary “Do you permit it?” is asked, and then, Hugo writes :
Enjolras pressed his hand with a smile.
This smile was not ended when the report resounded.
This time, it is said that Enjolras died smiling at Grantaire. We can only assume Eponine, too, was smiling, even if it was a weak smile.
Therefore, if we can observe parallels between the holding and the smiling, remains the dialogue. Does Grantaire’s “Do you permit it?” equal Eponine’s “I believe that I was a little bit in love with you?”
