Milo felt the change.
He lifted his head and rushed to the door in time to see his dad and aunt run by hand in hand, laughing. He giggled, thinking it was silly.
And then he felt it change. His code.
He'd known deep inside that he wasn't real. Known all along. He was programmed. He was fake. Neither of his parents had ever wanted to believe that, but it was true. He was nothing more than a handful of code in a digital world.
And now it was changing. No, not changing. It was being fulfilled.
His whole reason for existing was to make his parents happy, and with one parent gone, his whole attention had been for Steven and Steven only.
And now Steven was happy. Steven was truly happy and content with his decisions. Milo's directive had been fulfilled.
Milo grinned as he watched his dad and aunt disappear down the hall.
"Buh bye, Daddy. I wuv you."
And in a flash of golden light, Milo, room and all, dissolved and was gone, nothing more than a warm, fuzzy memory in the minds of all who knew him.
