your day is coming
the delfonics - the delfonics theme (how could you)
ughhhhhhhh. i am sick in love with this song. it makes me feel slightly like a sociopath when i’m driving and it’s dark, cloudy, pre-storm windy and the car beside me wants to dance. when i sing along it’s not pretty, it’s murderous and twisty and just a few moments from cruel. clouds are better than people.
it’s starts with this piano that’s reminiscent of gershwin, like that favourite part in rhapsody when the pace jumps and falls, jogs and pause-- good morning (!), what is this a xylophone?! a harp?! get it, girl. & then he comes in so sad, puppy dog sad, measured, he insists, i’ll cry if you leave me, as if he really just mispronounced die. but wait, this, the threat (this is my favourite part):
YOUR DAY IS COMING. SOMEONE WILL BREAK YOUR HEART. just you wait and see, baby you’ll come back to me
and yes, the soaring, dynamic falsetto should be the star of this track, but for me, it’s that steady, smooth background, that accusing, insistent, despondent, inescapable chorus how could you take / all of your love from me / knowing i’ll never be / the same if you leave me / i’ll cry if you leave me between charmingly casual verses... the acrobatic orchestration, offering somber horns here and cloying strings elsewhere, that harp (i’m not sure it’s a harp but i like it)!
