Writing drabble as I debate roleplaying on here again.
Leona breathed a soft sigh as she walked the policed stone floor of the palace, brilliant reds and golds flown from every window and splattered onto every tapestry and statue, though the high priestess’s face held a somber, downwards stare.
It had been years since her ascent by then, her rule and power having never been more concrete, but then, why was she beginning to feel powerless? Why did the dark whispers of few, and the dark promises of her dreams, slowly seem to drown out the bright light of her people? She had thought these childish insecurities had passed her by since her younger days as an acolyte, why then now does it seem like every shrewd critique on her ruling weights heavier on her with every one she hears? Why did she shudder at the dreams she knows only she has the power to prevent? Was it not for these reasons why she ascended? Ascended... Why did she ascend?
That period in time was almost like a dream in itself to her now, it all happened so fast. The elders’ death, the chase after Diana, the storm in her mind... By now it feels almost as if she could have imagined the whole thing, perhaps she wished she did. But why was it that she climbed the mountain that day? Was it only to seek out Diana? To seek justice? To seek answers? To seek power? It was all a haze to her now, even her own thoughts weren’t coming to her, was she even thinking back then?
Did she go up there to die? The thought sent shivers down her spine, recalling how helpless and lost she felt the night of Diana’s betrayal, as if her whole world had crumbled around her, her sun snuffed dark...
The solari stepped out onto a balcony overlooking the rest of the city, peering down at her people as they moved about, peering up at the sun filled sky, at least she could find comfort in these two niceties. Her people and her faith...
“Yes...” She said softly to herself, amber eyes turned up towards the blazing sun as a smile overtook her previous expression. “You’re right... It matters not.” Leona closed her eyes, taking in the sun’s glory as it hit her skin.
After a pause, she turned and walked back into the palace. Even if she had ascended the mountain to die... What she found at the peak gave her new life and purpose, and the strength to protect it all. What was a few insecurities and doubts in the face of such grand purpose?
