My headcanon is that Valak was particularly obsessed with Lorraine Warren because she reminded him of Irene with her prophetic vision and sensitivity to supernatural that both of them had. He hadn't seen Irene in years, and suddenly he felt the similar energy coming from Lorraine. Not even during the Enfield Poltergeist case. Valak sensed it when the Warrens were exercising an exorcism on Frenchie. He's been slowly attaching himself to Lorraine since then. Aaand then she condemned him back to hell just like Irene did. Dude's not doing great with women.
