Inktober Day 15: Legend

Legend. An urban legend.

Back in the day I used to pretty devoutly follow Humon. She’s a Danish comic artist who was pretty popular on DeviantArt (from what I can tell, her account is deleted now). Her most popular work was a Hetalia-esque thing called Scandinavia and the World. However I really loved it when she talked about Norse mythology and the fairy lore that she grew up with. I’ve always loved seeing interpretations of fae stuff that are more chaotic and sinister than the watered down fairy tales you tend to see in American culture. And Humon was largely the one who exposed me to that kind of stuff. One post that she made a long long time ago was of a Danish urban legend, the Tag Vandren. This creepy critter refuses to touch the ground and is said to jump great distances. While generally harmless, it can still hurt you by jumping on you when you are trying to outrun it, or can pull you out of a window. You can read a better summary of it here (as Humon’s original post no longer exists to my knowledge).

For some reason this creature has stuck with me all of these years and I still think of it in my nightly musings. So for this prompt I thought heck! Why do a classic legend? There’s prompts later for that kind of stuff. I’ll bring this old memory of an urban legend out!

7. Lost a limb

Fred glanced over his shoulder at Walker, his confusion turning to joy at the sight of them. "Oh hey, Walker! I've been doing fine, I just...huh." The wixard stood and turned to wave at the creature, though it was strange to do with just a stump where the rest of his arm should've been. "I seem to have misplaced my arm~"

"Oh, yeah. It does suck when someone says one thing and does the other, doesn’t it?" ||Someone's snappy||

Fred didn't fire back with a snippy response as quickly as he usually would have, and an unreadable expression crossed his face before he shrugged and smiled. "Ow, so wounded. You managed to point that out for once, Walker, ten points for you!" Though he smiled, his words came out in a flat tone. "Did you have a point?"

Send me ‘pinned’ and my character will react to yours pinning them against the wall.

The wixard finds themselves up against a wall, which is usually nice when it comes to figuring out their surroundings, but being pushed up against it sort of diminished any positive feelings about it. Nervously grinning, they try to pacify the creature with words. "Er... I'm sure we can talk this out, yeah? Just, um... stop with the snarling stuff for a bit. Y-you don't have to if you don't want to, I mean, it'd-it'd-it'd just be nice an' all and Godric what is with this sharp shit--" Staff gripped tightly in hand, they manage to give the wall behind them a tap. Realizing that those were claws, they frown and try to push the creature off them.

"Okay, c'mon now... it's only funny for a little while."

I think he's adorable! And well, I really like how developed he is and all, y'know? He's really fun to interact with(though I really end up watching interactions more often than not) and I like seeing different versions of Walker.

Walker jolted at the burning scent of iron, eyes widening and giving a concerned whine. He stepped a bit closer, seeing red, worried for his magic friend. Were they hurt?

"Oh, this? It's, uh... it's..." There was a pause, brought on both by pain and hesitation. He didn't exactly want to lie, but it was hard to shut down such a basic reflex. "I'll, uh... I can walk this off, definitely. Wh-what were we talking about?" Fred grinned at Walker, though the effect was probably changed due to his bloody teeth, and tried cleaning it off his hands with a handkerchief.

They took a few moments to get their thoughts together, then started. "Well, it's... it's like flying! Or, I mean, you make me feel like I'm flying sometimes, y'know? It's this whole thing where I don't really hide as much around you, and things feel so light for once, and I actually try not to be a vague dick about things! Still pretty hard to get out of that habit, but...you actually make me wanna put forth the effort, yeah?" It comes out more as them asking themselves the question, but they try to continue, their face reddening due to the topic."It's... I... When I'm flying, when I'm up in the air, and everything's just whizzing past me? Nothing much really hurts, and I feel freer than I usually can on land. So, what I'm trying to say is that I, er... You're like the wind beneath my wings? I mean, shit, that's kinda corny to say, but saying you're the wind beneath my broomstick isn't much better, is it? Just...the way I feel around you is hard to perfectly put into words, but I'll try not to lie about it anymore."

Fred glanced up once he felt a new weight on the top of his head, and his hands went up to check the item. Curiosity had him pull it off to inspect it closer, of course. Once he realized what it was, he grinned brightly and whirled to question Walker, genuinely excited. "Where'd you find one? It's been so long since I wore a hat like this~"
