Part 1, 2, 3, 4
Jason always hated when he had to go out in public. No matter how hard he tried, what he wore, how much he changed his hair and face, he always got looks. Sure, he was the late son of Bruce Wayne, and sure he still looked the same as when he died, but you’d think after 6 years nobody would remember his face enough to give him looks every time he stepped outside.
It wasn’t long before Jason just gave up and started going out in his mask. Sure, he still got the occasional looks, but he could just throw a cheap costume on or wear some sweatpants, and people started to assume he was just some kid with a crude sense of humor.
The only place he seemed to put everyone on edge when he entered was that stupid fast food burger joint down the street that Damian insisted they try together. Jason obviously agreed, taking any chace to eat a burger, shitty or not, and escape the house, but he really didn’t expect all the looks.
Hell, the entire time the two were eating the whole place was dead silent and everyone just stared at them. Damian didn’t seem to mind, but it bothered Jason to no end.
Damian: You’re not eating, Todd.
Jason: How is this not bothering you?
Damian: How does what not bother me?
Of course Damian didn’t notice. He tended to ignore everything that didn’t affect him. Jason just sighed.
Jason: Nothing.
Jason just stared at Damian for a long while, refusing to touch his food. He’d just eat in the car. It was easier than taking his helmet off and getting more stares. At least he knew this place was a bust. Definitely not coming here again. Too bad the kid seemed to enjoy his milkshake.
Jason decided after a while that he was tired of sitting out here. He wasn’t going to pull the kid away from the place while he was still eating and enjoying himself, but he needed to step out and.. Do something. The cold air outside should calm him down.
Damian watched as Jason pulled out a cigarette and silently walked outside, leaving all his food on the table, still carefully wrapped in the paper it came in. Damian sat alone for a while before he resigned to ignoring it and decided to go back to his food just as a worker carefully walked up to his table, almost like a bomb was strapped to the table, and leaned down next to Damian, giving him a visibly uncomfortable smile.
Employee: Hey, buddy-! How’s your food!
Damian was immediately suspicious. He’d noticed the employees eyeing him and Jason as they ordered, but now he had someone talking to him.
Damian, glaring, mouth full of fries: Acceptable, I suppose?
Employee: That’s good! Uh- Where’s your… mom? Dad?
Damian, nodding to the door: Akhi is outside smoking.
Employee: Oh! He- He’s your guardian?
Before Damian could respond, a shadow filled the table over the man’s shoulder and Jason cleared his throat. The employee jumped and practically bolted back towards the counter. Jason was quick to drag Damian out of there after that. And Damian didn’t blame him. Even he’d begun to grow annoyed by all the stares.
And the police pulling in just as they left really secured that choice for the two.
