Today should be a religious holiday! Vivacious sequined triple threat (actress, singer, dancer), the starlet originally pitched as “female Elvis” / “New Marilyn” (or “New Rita Hayworth”), Queen of Las Vegas, Valsjöbyn’s finest export and quintessential all-round sex-kitten-gone-berserk Ann-Margret (née Ann-Margret Olsson, 28 April 1941) turns 85! I treasure the memory of seeing the devilish Swedish American redheaded vixen’s glitzy one-woman revue at the Stardust Casino in 2005 when I happened to be in Vegas for the annual Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend. The night unfolded like a kitsch fever dream! At one point, she belted out Shania Twain's "I Feel Like a Woman" while wearing wraparound sunglasses and a fringed black leather biker jacket and draping herself across a Harley-Davidson while her male dancers gyrated and crotch-thrust around her. The Stardust was razed within two years, and Ann-Margret has since retired from live performances (she continues to act and occasionally record). Nice way to commemorate A-M turning 85: read her dreamy online December 2025 interview with Interview magazine. She’s known for never revealing anything of substance and speaking (with the earnestness of a beauty pageant contestant) in rehearsed showbiz platitudes (a quality she shares with contemporary Liza Minnelli). Superfan and authority on all things camp Andrew Hopf (aka imyourauntiemame on Instagram) asks her genuinely interesting, knowledgeable and appreciative questions. A-M is typically unforthcoming and never lets the showbiz mask drop – and yet it doesn’t matter as they are so sweet and funny together. Especially when she’s cooing endearments to Hopf like, “That makes me laugh, that’s great!” and “Oh my gosh, what a delight you are.
