An Excerpt From My Original Story

“We’re here,” Emiko whispered as her hands reached up to finally remove the blindfold blocking her sister’s view. Yuzi gasped as her vision returned and she saw just what her sister wanted to show her. They stood on the edge of the plateau their village was built on surrounded by trees and firebugs that lit up the dimming sky. The sunset lit up the ocean of clouds that extended below them in a sea of pink, orange, and purple. Even the few clouds above them were tinted orange as the sun sank below them.

“You’re gonna catch firebugs on your tongue if you keep staring with your mouth open like that.” Emiko laughed as she gently pushed up on her sister’s chin to close her mouth. She ruffled Yuzi’s hair before sitting down on a nearby rock.

“It’s so pretty Em!” Yuzi smiled as she took it all in.

Bewildered and amazed Yuzi crept closer to the edge careful not to get too close, but wanting to see more of what laid beyond the cliff. Just what else was out there? What else lay beyond the village?

“Don’t stand too close to the edge Yuzi! It isn’t safe.” Emiko stood and made her way towards Yuzi.

“I’ll be okay! I won’t stand too close to the edge Em.” With a mischievous grin on her face, Yuzi knelt and began to crawl towards the edge. She said she wouldn’t stand, but she didn’t say she wouldn’t crawl near the edge, “I just wanna see what’s down there.”

Emiko stood a few feet behind her ready to catch her if she began to fall. “Just be careful.”

Yuzi stopped a few feet from the cliff and lay down on her belly. She inched forward until her head was just over the side of the cliff and she could see all the way down to where the clouds swirled around the cliff.

“How far does the cliff go after the clouds?”

“I don’t know.” Emiko sat beside her sister, a little further from the edge as she too looked down at the sea of clouds, “Maybe we shouldn’t be so close to the edge Yu.” Her voice had a warble at the end of it as she scooted further back from the edge.

“I’m not afraid.” Yuzi smiled as she scooted forward a little more and spread her arms out to either side. “Look Em I’m flying!” Her giggles filled the air as she pulled her arms back.

“Don’t joke around like that Yuzi. You could fall!”

Something flitted through the clouds below Yuzi catching her eye, pulling her attention away from her sister’s warning.

“What was that!?” A speck of blue and white rose above the clouds again for just a moment before disappearing beneath them.

Emiko scooted a little closer to look. “What was what?”

“There do you see it?” Yuzi pointed just above the cloud line. She heard a faint noise come from down below. It sounded familiar, like a faint voice calling out to her.

Without realizing it Yuzi inched forward called by the voice. All at once she felt herself falling forward snapping her back to reality. She desperately swung her arms back behind her to grab anything she could to keep herself from falling, but it was too late. She was already plummeting through the air, spinning wildly as the whole sky became nothing but a blur around her. She couldn’t breathe or hear a thing as the wind rushed passed her ears and across her face. Before she knew it the clouds were rushing up to meet her.
