Archive of Pendulum+Digital+Fabric.pdf

Originally, I wanted to put another screen for archiving along with showing fabrication process like a photo album. So that the concept of heritage can be actually seen and also gathering the image datas, it was interesting to think about patterns created by logical randomness can be an another tendency or flow of unspecified individuals. Lining up left over images made a certain feeling of seeing a pattern in complexity just like looking at the trajectory of double pendulum movement. It was nice to bring that idea and physically feel in reality.

Harmony of Ancient and Modern technology & perspective of Deconstruction

During the process of my project, I felt that pendulum is a simple physics tool not exactly from ancient but has primitive structure and with the same way of using, it results to totally different way of generating complexed digital images. I feel my project literally shows visualization of human heritage where I feel wonder about it. Combining notions from different fields like fashion, art, physics etc, I want my art piece to be an example of realizationing the imaginated ideas for the upcoming future(4th industrial revolution) which has a key concept of super fusion. Biology, manufacturing, motor technology etc.. everything is becoming combined more and more easily and if specializing into one subject was beneficial until now, taking concepts around the world and creating a new notion will be beneficial and will be possible. I think it is a good opportunity to make the dream come true at this point of time. To do this, one of the methodology I want to suggest is having a or rather many perspective of deconstruction. Dissolving the structure, theme, notions and by looking at seperately, it will make a bit more clear what materials that I can use to combine and inspire the creativity.

Concept of Automatic Digital Fabric Generator-

Thinking about how to visualize the converted physical datas, rather than giving generative drawing images using only computing notions, I came up with an idea of applying NFT notion and combine it with fashion fabric. By framing the complexed patterns of visual outcome as a rectangular shape, I could apply the notion of digital fabric sample just more than digital generated images and by generating a private code with the digital fabric, I can strengthen the idea of identifying the users and personalize the visual outcomes. I am not applying the NFT notion to make something profitable, but actually it is to use the trend make the art piece more familiar and enjoyable to the public. I feel this kind of attempt is good way of thinking as an artist considering the perspective of the audiences which makes my narrative more understandable.

Creating digital data of Pendulum movement-Arduino sensors or 3 faced webcams?

Thinking of methodology of how to convert pendulum movement which is physical data to digital data that I can use in computer for visualising, two options were using Arduino with sensors(ultrasonic, magnetic hall, infrared etc..) and using webcams by setting them at top, right, left to create something like x,y,z plane and define the movement by position. 

Using sensors may let able to collect more practical and precise datas of the actual physical datas. But research of the sensors should be done and have to learn Arduino physical computing.

Using webcams may not be precise in datas and not sure how much variation would eventually come out but I can maybe add machine learning system at certain point like defining whether the pendulum movement is activated or not. Other than that, it may cost more and it may limit the esthetic with three cameras on the sides.

Idea of pendulum as interactive element in interactive art-

Double pendulum is one typical example of showing chaos theory. By seeing the movement and then the trajectory of it, the randomness seems to be totally unpredictable but creates certain patterns when visualizing the trajectory. The key element that defines the difference is initial condition of the pendulum. My idea is that every audience will give different condition to the pendulum when making the movement of the pendulum and just like butterfly effect, the system maximises the little difference between the initial conditions. In this term, single-rod pendulum can have the same feature. I found it very interesting that if I could create certain process of visualizing by using the certain data from the pendulum movement, I could identify each movement and give severalty to them which can be similar to security password system maybe. What beneficial more is that giving an initial condition to pendulum(direction&force) is just simple as unlocking smart phone screen. Just pull to the position and let it go. Identifying the audience without any QR code or personal information and giving individual interaction with the art piece is truly beneficial as an interactive method. The thing is to how to collect the data of pendulum movement, and how it will interact or visualize the datas.

Work-in-progress Term2 Project Proposal summary

An interactive installation with a pendulum stand and a screen that interacts with a code that draws generative drawing. Theory based on the Chaos Theory: repetition, self-similarity, fractals in the randomness.

 I have been to the Hatchlab. Did research about sensors(ultra sonic, illumination, infrared...) and softwares & kits(Arduino, Raspberry Pie, Hydra...) and sketched the versions of possible prototypes. 

 I want my project displayed with a big screen and pendulum installment with simple discription and a printer. The type of sensor I will use might change the preference of whether the room is bright, dark, quiet. 

The next step will be moving on to the crafting of one of the possible versions,  Arduino with ultra sonic sensor. Also reconsider whether to add complexity in the form of double, or triple pendulum to fit the Chaos Theory context.
