"You're the best thing I have."
The soft-spoken whisper in her ear was laced with an almost sad sense of desire, understandably so considering the benefactor had been away for a while, much longer than initially anticipated, leaving Nikki behind to hold the fort until she returned.
And by god Lorraine felt horrible for it. Her hand had immediately reached for that of her wife’s, closing around it in silent reassurance that she would not go anywhere in the near future. They stood like that for a few long seconds, until finally she broke the stillness and the silence and turned fully to wrap her arms in a soft embrace around Nikki, resting her head into her frame gently, almost as if she were fragile, even if Lorraine knew full well that it wasn’t the case.
"Nothing else compares to you, you know that right?" It was spoken it a choked whisper of its own, Lorraine’s heart too full of guilt at leaving for so long to try and sound uplifting. She cherished their time together when it happened and missed it when it didn’t, instead holding on to those memories as she tried to push herself on through whatever she was doing instead.
She felt human when she was with Nikki - and she had no idea how much she missed those elements of humanity she’d cut away from herself until she got them back again.
"Whatever happens, whatever tries to get in our way, we will stick together. I don’t just want you Nikki - I need you. I’ve been away for far too long recently and it’s been horrible, and I’ve needed to come back to this, to the lack of work, to us, to stop myself going insane again, to remind myself I’m still human. You’re more than the best thing I’ve ever had - you’re the only thing that holds me together somedays. I love you…always remember that.”
