How did meditation begin? Like who was the first to meditate and why was it performed? How has it changed over time since it began?

The meditative state is not limited to traditional meditation. Any activity which breaks the train of the internal dialog is a meditation. You see, the natural state of human beings is a child like happiness. Our internal talking creates fear as our ego spurs us on to prepare for future calamities and/or to push us to be better than we are in finding mates and finding security. Ego uses anxiety to accomplish this. Once the mind has quieted the natural peace returns and even a little of this can serve to improve our frame of mind.

Originally meditation was induced by chanting prayers. Later on other forms of meditation developed. There is wall art of a figure in the lotus position found in the Indus Valley in India which is thought to be about 5500 years old and perhaps even older.
