Believe nothing you hear, and only one-half that you see.”» (The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether) ~ #Finished: #TheCompleteStories by #EdgarAllanPoe. • Rating: 9/10 (the collection overall) • It's impossible for me to review each of the +60 #stories, so here's my brief overview of them. Certain themes or motifs, such as the death of a beautiful woman, revenge, premature burial, mesmerism and murders unintentionally revealed, recur prevailingly in most of the stories, which are exciting and astonishing, manifest Poe's wit, creativity, and excellence in the #gothic and the #macabre. I've rated 22 stories 10/10, including #TheFallOfTheHouseOfUsher, #TheBlackCat, #TheGoldBug, the lesser-known gems like Hop-Frog, The Man That Was Used Up, The 1002nd Tale of Scheherazade, The Spectacles; as well as my three re-reads, #ThePitAndThePendulum, #TheTellTaleHeart and #TheCaskOfAmontillado. Poe's only complete novel #TheNarrativeOfArthurGordonPymOfNantucket is highly captivating yet shocking and partly gruesome. I thoroughly liked all detective/ratiocination stories, EXCEPT "The Mystery of Marie Rogêt", which I found too confusing to enjoy. Besides, I really didn't like most of Poe's satire and comedy, "Lionizing" and "Mystification" were the worst. Short horror story "Siope: A Fable" was also bad. ~ «A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser. It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong.» (The Cask of Amontillado) ~ «Ah, not in knowledge is happiness, but in the acquisition of knowledge! I'm pretty much enjoying this tome—it offers a long and uncanny yet enthralling, multifaceted adventure. Almost all of the stories are interesting; however, I must say that a few of them are just too absurd or obscure. Besides, I skimmed through most of "The Unparalleled Adventure of Hans One Pfaall" and "The Journal of Julius Rodman", an unfinished novel, both of which I think were not interesting enough to force myself to read thoroughly as there were more celebrated stories in the further pages which I was looking forward to. But still, #Poe's excellent imagination, wit and masterly plots shine through many of the stories, such as "#TheFallOfTheHouseOfUsher", "#TheMurdersInTheRueMorgue", "#TheMasqueOfTheRedDeath", "#WilliamWilson", and "#TheManThatWasUsedUp". ~ «Funds even the most ample, are not always everlasting…» (King Pest) ~ «… I know not how it was—but, with the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit.
