Four Way Books Author Readings This Week

Tomorrow, Wednesday, October 14, at 7 pm, J. Mae Barizo (The Cumulus Effect) will read for “Love in the Time of War”, a concert, reading, and discussion devoted to war, memory, and the role art plays in healing, at  WAMFest at the Fairleigh Dickinson University Florham Campus in Lenfell Hall (285 Madison Avenue) in Madison, NJ. 

This Thursday, October 15, at 6 pm, Reginald Dwayne Betts (Bastards of the Reagan Era) will read with Ravi Howard, Sanderia Faye, Latoya Watkins, and Rosalyn Story for Kimblio Litfest at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX.

This Thursday, October 15, at 7 pm, Elizabeth T. Gray, Jr. (Series | India) will read for The Poetry Institute (847 Chapel St.) in New Haven, CT.

This Thursday, October 15, at 7:30 pm, Gregory Pardlo (Digest) will read at SUNY Plattsburgh in Plattsburgh, NY.

This Thursday, October 15, at 7 pm, Stephanie Ford (All Pilgrim) will read at The Poetry Lab (WE Labs, 235 E Broadway, 8th Floor) in Long Beach, CA.

This Saturday and Sunday, October 17 and 18, Pulitzer Prize winner Gregory Pardlo (Digest) will read at the Texas Book Festival in Austin, TX.

 Meet J.Mae Barizo, author of The Cumulus Effect

Born in Toronto, J. Mae Barizo is a poet, critic and performer.  Recent work appears in AGNI, Bookforum, Boston Review and Los Angeles Review of Books.  She is the recipient of fellowships and awards from Bennington College, the Jerome Foundation and Poets House. A classically-trained musician and a champion of cross-genre work, J. Mae has performed sound/text collaborations with musicians from The National, Bon Iver, and the American String Quartet. The Cumulus Effect is her first book.  She lives in New York City. 

  About The Cumulus Effect

The sequential poems in The Cumulus Effect map how the intersections between geography, memory, and desire weave personal, unavoidable history. The book’s structure alludes to “method of loci” or “memory palace,” the ancient mnemonic technique of spatial memorization.  Minimalist, but insistently mercurial, the poems move through American and European cities: seduction in an Neoclassical palace in Saint Petersburg; a “hindsight of blood” in New York City; late-summer longing in Berlin’s Senefelder Platz. Like the erratic sky of the book’s title poem, these verses are laced with an uncanny delicacy; The Cumulus Effect sets on the page a prismatic and complex topography of the body forever en route.

This Sunday, March 1, at 3 pm, J.
