The Parkinsons/The X-Rays/Thee Eviltones @ Rough Trade In Nottingham

I attended an amazing night put on by Dead By Mono Records at the end of June this year to watch one of my favourite ever groups The Parkinsons, but also to check out some great talent that I was unaware of. To begin the night; 'A Long Way To Nowhere', a film by Caroline Richards about the legendary Portuguese punks was shown on a projector opposite the stage, the second time I had seen it after the sell out premiere at the Prince Charles Theatre in London a couple of Christmas's ago! This event in Nottingham was also sold out, and you can see above a picture of me on top of The Parkinsons drum kit after Al gave me the mic to sing their last tune. Photography by Stephanie Webb.

Opening this excellent event are THEE EVILTONES, a garage punk quartet that could've been given birth to at Dirty Water Club (a cult club night at London's Boston Music Room). They have the look, sunglasses after dark, and every New York punks wardrobe during the mid to late 70's. They're like The Idles, Johnny Thunders And The Heartbreakers, and of more recent years Thee Exciters. I'm enjoying mostly the Richard Hell style solo's from their axe man Tiago Queiroz, though the rest of the group play just as hard. They're billed to play Blast Off Festival in the very same city alongside such greats as The Pretty Things, The Fuzztones, and many more over the period of 4 days from 9th - 12th of November. It looks to be one of the East Midlands best line ups of the year! Nottingham seems to have a few hidden gems in it's mists. Everyone by now are well aware of the gobby duet that is Sleaford Mods, and I bet they played their early shows in this very room of Nottingham's Rough Trade, but I'm more for guitar bands personally, as musically SM have nothing on groups like these that I'm being treated to tonight.
