S U F F E R I N G Moving through suffering can seem like getting sucked into a vortex of doom. It is easy for us to focus on the despair, we get into self pity and the why me comes up. #TheFiveKleshas are explained in the #YogaSutras as the root of our suffering and by understanding these 5, we can see suffering in a different light. Like the famous saying, no mud no lotus. Suffering is the bridge to transcendence. This is not to desensitize what we are experiencing as a whole but more so to shed light on the necessity and the impact that it is creating at the moment. In order to see this silver lining we must first understand the ways that suffering can hold us back. At first glance when a sudden shift occurs it shakes the ground underneath us and changes our routine. It dismantles everything that’s familiar and “true” in our world. And I’d say our current situation has done just that. #Avidya is the misunderstanding of who we really are. The fact that we are not that one role we play in this life but we are so much more. This is our ignorance, our forgetting of how powerful we really are and because of this we attach to an external label. #Asmita ,the disruption of ego, can hold some of us back, some of us unable to change gears. We tend to cling to our old self, our old identification, “I have to leave the house to feel productive”, the provider “I caregiver”, “the martyr”, “the comfortable one” and so on. But many of us are shifting into different roles and leaving the old ones we thought were only us behind. Shedding the old ideals, which now goes into another klesha. #Dvesha an aversion to pain. This is due to the process of shedding the old skin. This is when we filter out the old habits and ideals that sustained our ego. We are now asked to do away with everything that does not benefit us and this is not necessarily easy. We are left to examine this in our lives and it can be tough for many of us. We don’t like change because of the work it takes and because we may find things we don’t really want to discover, but in order for regeneration we must dust off the cobwebs.
