🩸 El Penitente / Blasphemous // Detalles / Details 🩸 . 🎮Leaving the gameplay aside (which is incredible), the lore and the world building are the things that hooked me the most about the game. The world of Cvstodia (and its characters) has a very massive development and construction, which for a geek like me (who eats data as if there were no tomorrow) is an inexhaustible source of stories. . The design and art are of the highest peaks, all worked in pixel art, opening the doors to a never seen fantasy world, based on spanish art and culture. Blasphemous, a dark fantasy action platformer

Blasphemous is an action-platform hack-n-slash that features deep combat, fast pace and an impressive aesthetics with a dark and precious style. The Game Kitchen, a Spanish development studio well know by the graphic adventure The Last Door, signs this new project which Kickstarter campaign has become an absolute success. According to its developers, Blasphemous is the perfect mix between a 2D Dark Souls and a Castlevania title with no linear levels. The game's narrative is based in the environment so it doesn't get in the way and it allows the players to deepen in the story at their own pace (another key element taken from the Dark Souls saga). The remarkable ambientation of Blasphemous uses the wide Christian imaginary as main reference, making a special emphasis on gothic architecture, ecclesiastical figures and the Holy Week of Sevilla, everything with a tenebrous twist.

The story takes place in the lands of Orthodoxia, a place where the religious cult rules the life of all mortals. The Corruption Age has started and the greedy church leaders who fought for the High Pontifex throne have become horrible blood thirsty beasts. The player takes the role of The Penitent, the only survivor of a rogue congregation which was eliminated and thrown to the great Abyss of the Eternal Grief. The enemies are disfigured versions of religious acolytes: altar boys, penitents, nuns, martyrs, holy processions and many other nightmare monsters.

The production of the game looks outstanding at all levels. The game design is solid and appealing, although there is no available demo the videos shows a lot of gameplay and the game features a good balance between platforms, exploration, combats and final bosses. Art direction is also impressive, based on religious art and the local folklore of Sevilla, everything twisted by corruption and decay which brings a dark fantasy world hand crafted with an exquisite pixel art. Our beloved Raúl Vivar, character designer and animator in Crimson Breath, has also put his talent to bring to life The Penitent and the other creatures of Orthodoxia, with a wide variety of movements and executions that have captivated to the fans of the genre. The music is also excellent and Carlos Viola composes some themes that mix dark musical motives with hard rock.

With these credentials it isn't strange the Blasphemous' Kickstarter campaign gathered its base goal (50.000 dollars) in just 24 hours. In the middle of its campaign the project has collected more than 150.000 dollars and it keeps smashing stretch goals among which are more game modes with challenges and secrets, full translations to many languages, weekly events, extra levels, online functionalities and other features. For just 20 dollars the backers can get game in digital download when it is available (around Q1 2019) and access to wallpapers, ringtones and other content. The superior pledges includes the art book (digital format or physic format), posters, T-shirts, Early Access to the game and other interesting extras.

Recently The Game Kitchen has confirmed Blasphemous will be released on PC and consoles (PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch) simultaneously, great news for all the enthusiasts of the game

🩸 Here is the Penitent one of @blasphemousgame, a holy videogame character who has earned my worship 🙌 . During the 2020 lockdown we played this badass game with @flor__corbella and here is my tribute to it. 🎮 We lost track of time with this one and it was a great companion to us during the first months of the pandemic. We (and the whole world) also did our penance 🙇.
