Book Review: The Good Daughter

Shoutout to The Skimm for the epic recommendation!

This whole book was suspenseful and I finished it on a weekend.

Story centers around The Quinn family that lives in Northern Georgia. The patriarch of the family is Rusty Quinn, a defense lawyer that is unpopular in their small city for his belief that everyone deserves a fair chance in the eye of the law. On one fateful night, Rusty’s work finally catches up with the Quinn family and change their lives irreparably. 28 years later, the pieces are finally coming back together while another new mystery rocks the Pikeville town.

That is my corny book review. Mostly because I can’t explain too much without having word vomit and giving everything away.

The Good Daughter is a stand-alone novel from Karin Slaughter. “Charlie Quinn is practicing law in Pikeville, following in her father’s footsteps. Her father being the infamous defense attorney, Rusty Quinn. Twenty-eight years after her mother’s murder there is a school shooting and Rusty agrees to represent the suspect. People are outraged and threaten the family. But there are some weird things about the shooting. And there are long time secrets that Charlie wants to keep hidden...” Slaughter does not hold back on her crime-fiction. There are several moments as a reader where you keep saying “Don’t do that to that character!” But she does 😱 If you’ve read any Slaughter you know that no character is safe. That’s part of what makes her books so good. You never know who will make it to the end. There are lots of twists. You may even guess some of it. The Good Daughter by Karin Slaughter is a story about personal tragedies that tear us apart and pull us back together. Rusty is a lawyer that believes everyone- regardless of gender, race, class, etc.- deserves to be fairly represented in the eyes of the court. He’s known for helping the poorer members of the community. When his daughters, Charlie and Sam, are teenagers, a couple of armed men enter their house looking for Rusty. Both are brutally attacked and their mother is killed.

Twenty-eight years later, the sisters are estranged; Charlie is once again the witness to a terrible crime which brings up long buried secrets. Sam comes back to Pikeville at Charlie’s husband’s request. Can the sister’s reconcile? Are these crimes related or does Charlie just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time?

I loved this book, it had a great pace and a few surprises. I liked that the story was told from both sister’s points of view, so you were never fully on one person’s side.
