The Famine Memorial in Dublin, created by Rowan Gillespie. First taters of the season! Lifted yesterday by Rosie (@roreilly23) at Roughwood. Duke of York Potato was bred by William Sim of Aberdeenshire in the east of Scotland. Born the year before the great famine, his future work would include attempting to breed disease-resistant potatoes. This one, supposedly a controlled cross of Early Primrose and King Kidney, was his most popular and award-winning creation (though he made no money from its sale). This potato is delicious and while it is not necessarily immune to late blight, it is harvested before much damage can be done! This work is from a project I have been working on for a while. It is about the Great Irish famine and is based on the idea of degeneration and starvation. I chose this theme as it is such a catastrophic yet important event in irish history, which not only shaped Ireland but America as well. This tragedy deserves to be looked back on and remembered and this was my way of doing that. If any one feels like reading into it 'The Great Hunger' by Cecil Woodham Smith and 'This Great Calamity' by Christine Kinealy are good books to check out.
