Details from Mark Bradford’s paintings in Scorched Earth at the Hammer. Caught the very last day and it was well worth the drive from Oakland. The most surprising works were the newest where Bradford created the comparatively minimal surface through the removal of black paper on the white canvas, creating a marbled and fissured stain on the surface.

Bradford’s work has always related to place, either through replication of a map and/or through the materials sourced for his layered paintings. With this work the geology of his paintings is revealed unlike before. Even a micro geology as the compositions which reference cells infected with the HIV virus depict the cellular as well as geological structure.  Deep gorges are cut into the surfaces revealing strata of process. Large boulder like “cells” are buried and, through the forced erosion of sanding and scraping, are unearthed and made graphically aware. 

These works draw the terrestrial closer to the cellular; the body as territory. And like most territories comes the politics of place, borders, battles (both within and outward), and questions of what really separates us.

In anticipation of Bradford’s upcoming video, Spiderman, at the Hammer, here is a glimpse into his earlier video, Practice. His words in this Art 21 video are particularly charged and empowered given the recent racist murders in Charleston. I find Bradford’s courage, determination and willingness to address issues around race, gender and urban segregation across a wide platform a powerful example in ignorant times.
