Today is Hy Eisman's 90th birthday. Hy has been teaching at The Kubert School since it's inception. Pictured are the well wishes of a small cross-section of people… Students and teachers… Whose lives he has influenced and touched. Copied below is an email from one of our esteemed alum that was read to Hy at his celebration last week. Part 1 of 2. Happy Birthday Hy! "Dear Hy, I wish I could be there with you all to celebrate your 50th birthday today (albeit, belatedly by an orbit or two around the sun). Unfortunately, Batman and Elmer Fudd are keeping me chained to the table (yes, your hearing is working just fine— I said Batman and Elmer Fudd). I hope and trust you will be made to feel the king today — you’ve earned it! In the 30 plus years since my time at Kubert, I have continually enjoyed sharing how it was my lettering teacher who gave me some of the most memorable and valuable drawing tips that I’ve carried with me through every page, every job, and every year that I’ve been privileged to work in this industry. One of your gems was a suggestion to add a silhouette per page when appropriate; this, you said, would give a visual rest to the eye, and a nice strong graphic moment to the page. You’ve been proven right too many times to count. Another gem came while working on a titling assignment for your class. I’d incorporated into the title a noirish figure in hat and coat, holding a gun. In minutes, you fixed the cuff on the guy’s pants, demonstrating how the material would fall only to a point before cutting at an angle at the cuff area (not the soft, amorphous goo of a fold I had drawn). Part 2 of 2 "Both of these were real “lightbulb” moments — just a couple among many…that they came from my lettering teacher. Whether by your stories from the trenches of the job or from your anecdotes of serving with Hugh Hefner, you demonstrated cool and fun with a razor wit all those years ago; and if Adam’s latest Instagram post of your recent lunch at “Dick’s” diner is any indication, it’s clear to see neither the cool, the fun, _nor_ the razor wit have waned. So on your birthday, I just wanted to take the opportunity to say a heartfelt, “thank you” for extending yourself beyond the boundaries of whatever class you were teaching to share anything and everything you had to the greenhorns like me, who possessed the vim and the vigor, but lacked the knowledge and wisdom. Thank you for sharing yours so freely. I know I’m just one of a vast number of others who would agree… … you’ve made a difference. God bless you, Hy! Mazel tov!
