"Come back to bed."
It is a late hour and Anna had slipped out of the bed, carefully picking her way across the wooden floor so as not to wake her slumbering sister. She is driven solely by the need to deliver much needed news to the drop point before the break of dawn. The arrival of the sunlight would render the meeting impossible for another six to twelve hours. That delay could be detrimental to the rings efforts. The news had to reach General Washington and the sooner the better.
She promptly dressed, making sure to remain as quite as possible. The parchment tucked carefully into the fabric of her stalkings. The brunette is nearly to the door when the words of her sister reach her ears.
The brunette startles slight, spinning about and bathed in the splendor of pastel yellow of a flickering candle. Her brown-hues soften and her lips slowly allow a gentle smile to appear.
“I will…. I promise. But there be something I must attend to immediately. I must see…. Abraham …ab…about securing….. Selah’s release f….from the Jersey,” Anna replies with a sigh. It was a lie….a lie for the good of the Patriot Cause. It can not be helped. For Anna knows just what her sister would do if she knew just what Anna was doing.
“Go back to sleep. I shall return in a while….” Anna adds. She would rather have her sister suspect her of adultery than sedition. The brunette makes no effort to immediately return to bed. She must get the letter into Caleb’s hands before anyone else can have a chance to find it.
