Don't Wake Me (Was the original song and the inspiration)
Breathe (More of what I listened to when writing it)
The scene was snowy... of course it was. Wash knew this place all too well. This high and lonely cliff. He faced his brother, who's back was towards the edge of the outcropping, and it wasn't the golden dome of a visor that stared back, but a face. Wash knew that face too. It was thinner, more gaunt than he remembered and sadder... but still him. It was still Maine. Sigma was gone, there was no trace of him in the way the behemoth stood, but there was also very little pride in the way Maine held himself. Amazing how such a small thing can hurt so much.
"I'm sor-" Words were obliterated by the wind as always, he knew that, why did he try? Because he needed Maine to hear him. Washington needed his brother to know that it wasn't his fault- That Wash didn't blame him.. He needed to say so much.. but he only had so much time to do it and no ability to make it happen. Time was already nearly up. The ivory soldier too a step back, dangerously close to the cliff-edge. Wash reached out- he always did, it was always the same- and tried to call to him, tried to tell Maine to stop-
But it was lost again, just like fucking everything, just like Maine was and there wasn't a damn thing Wash could do. Helplessness crushed him and tears froze fast to his face, his begging swirling away in the gale winds.
PLEASE, PLEASE STAY- MARK PLEASE DON'T GO- I NEED YOU!!
I need you...
Markham's eyes were closed, arms stretched wide as he fell back- A scream of anguish pierced the white void whirling around them and Wash grasped at air. Always a second too late, always, always- but not this time.. He wouldn't let Maine go alone this time, he wouldn't leave him again. Not this time his mind screamed, abandoning all fear and the will of self-preservation. Not this time, he felt the words reverberate within himself as he plummeted down after his brother. Death awaited at the bottom and ice daggers cut into his face and ripped the air from his lungs, the wind tearing at his face and body on his downward descent into what could have very well been hell. Wash couldn't care less.
Suddenly his fall was jerked to a halt and after a moment Wash felt warmth flood his frozen features once again. Arms enveloped him securely, protecting him from the seemingly endless wind, there was breath in his hair, and a thunder-crackle chuckle in the air. Pressing himself into the form below him like a child, Wash breathed slowly, "Please don't go-"
"Never left..."
