Thank you for a beautiful long weekend. It was our first week of taking orders right at the door. I was nervous to try it out, but it went fine. I think maybe four people didn’t have masks on, and they immediately put them on when I asked. Lots of tourists and new buddies, lots of familiar faces which we could only see half of. Lots of hand sanitizer. Inspired by @aliciadkennedy ‘s recent writing about how for her the role of a chef has shifted from reverence to some disdain to “keepers of knowledge and creators of occasion,” I’ve been thinking about the responsibility of this café in this town. I only want to run businesses if they are secret platforms for my politics. Commissary! has always pushed an agenda: local produce, good ingredients, veganism without deprivation, hard work, #themitzvahwall, the bathroom with political posters, drag shows and small bands playing now and then. But now our world is so much harsher, less caring, and I’ve been thinking about the idea of actually just CARING for BEINGS as a political act. To say that we will stay soft, to say that we are here to nurture. I have been driving the staff nuts trying to keep our quality control way way up—and they’re here for it, because they are gems, and that’s why they work here. We are obsessed with wanting everything to be nothing short of astonishingly perfect for you. We don’t want your milkshake to melt on the way to you, even if you’re 1/2 hour away. We want your to-go cheese plate to look like a little Mondrian when you open the box. “Essential business” is a weird term for a joint that makes macchiatos but being designated as one has shifted my brain a little. Comfort and care is what’s lacking right now, and if we can give you a little, that feels like a political act right now. There is more work to be done — in November, ahem. But for now please accept a chocolate bar made with good ethics, a slushy with interesting flavors and a lush texture—these small things that are metonymy for everything. For a long time, way before Commissary! even, we’ve sold #socialistslidingscalesoup. It’s always felt strange, like we’re this fancy place trying to virtue signal by having this cute gimmick. What person who needed a good bowl of soup was going to hear about an expensive vegan chocolate shop, then an overly precious little café, who made soup you could pay whatever you want for? That aspect of it always bothered me but since I’m an annoyingly earnest person we just kept making the soup. #themitzvahwall was an attempt to push this idea further, and mostly it’s just lovely middle-class people buying treats for their middle-class friends, but sometimes people come in because they want a meal or a treat and heard it’s a place to get one when you’re a bit strapped. Now, with the new reality, for the first time I feel like my paltry liberal-guilt efforts to, ah, be the change lol, are working a little more and I’m of course mad that life had to get worse in order for that to happen. People call us regularly because they’ve heard that you can get $20 of free food. No matter what, we’ll never turn anyone away from redeeming that $20, at least until this crisis passes and we reopen and the actual Mitzvah Wall is a thing again. We’ve been lucky that through generous gift card purchases from customers we’ve only rarely had to chip in from our own revenues in order to do $20 MitzMeals. All this is to say that we could use, if you’re feeling flush, another top-up of funds. We do roughly $200 of mitzvah meals a week at this point, which is not huge but it’s a simple way to serve our community. We used to have a sign in the window saying we had Stumptown and city folk knew to come in because of it. All the weird signifiers.
